My early 95 S420 had a plain shift knob. Other 95s I see have the newer style bayonet mount shift knob with MB logo.

What speedo is that?
The 140 sedan speedos have the analog or digital odometer displays in about the sam place, at the bottom of the speedo. Sixto 93 300SD |

That pic that JimF posted looks like its from a later model 124 or 126 with traction control.
It is my understanding that the 1994 140's were issued with analog odometers, and 1995 was the first year of the digital. So many pre 1995's have been replaced by now that is very common to see them. Fact is, THAT digital odometer is NOT from a S 500 of ANY year in the US. Also, a Carfax can only verify that tracking and records are consistent, nothing more with respect to mileage. They can't really verify if a cluster has been changed or altered outside of an authorized dealership, just that the mileage reported is no less than the last time it was reported. It helps of course, but is no guarantee. Since it's not the correct odometer in this particular vehicle, the car can never be an actual mile vehicle (unless Mercedes installed the wrong unit (which I doubt) and will document it). As many 140's and S500 as he has had, it's hard to imagine he didn't notice it was not an S 500 odometer/cluster. Should he read this he is duly notified, accepting the notion that he was previously unaware. He should return it to the auction or seller for arbitration on this issue, they will have no choice but to refund his money or compensated for diminished value. Should he elect not to, ethically he should state that the cluster has been changed and the car is TMU in MHO.

Yes, as Black said, get a Vehicle Master Report (VMI) and that should contain EVERYTHING that was fixed/replaced/serviced on that car.

If the cluster was replaced and done so outside of the warranty, it wouldn't show up.

There isn't more detail other than the performing shop and service underwriter documentation. Good luck getting those records.
Electrical, AC and front suspension service is common on early 140s. The original wiring harness was not long for this world and the heat within the cramp S600 engine bay accelerates deterioration of the wiring harness. I've heard of wishful thinking when dealing with AC issues. Replacement of smaller items, filling the system with sealer, etc. were attempted before realizing/admitting that the problem was a leaky evaporator. Control arm bushings were flaky on early cars and caused vibration and tracking problems. Seeing claims come up repeatedly suggests that the problems were not fully understood (I'm not sure they're fully understood today). Ideally you will find credible documentation that confirms that car has the latest wiring harness, evaporator and front suspension bushings. Without that confirmation you should consider that you will be paying for these updates. I can't comment on transmission and body service. The 722.4 transmission should not have problems at 55K miles. Was it abused? Did someone try to outwit traction control to do burn-outs? There are a number of body electical systems that were upgraded over time (convenience module, closing assist pump, etc.) which might be categorized as body service. Again, though, unless you can confirm the car has the latest fixes, you'll likely get stuck with the cost. It appears you will be the 7th owner of that car. Talk about unwanted. In short, this is why everyone recommends 97-99 cars... which I still claim you cannot distinguish visually from the 92-95 cars. Sixto 93 300SD |

I think the best thing to do now is find the car you really like and take it to a Mercedes mechanic who knows W140s and more importantly, a 12 banger.
Go through all the electrical gizmos as Sixto described and have the wrench check everything else. Might be the best $150 you ever spent. |

Hey guys, I went up and checked the car out, took a very knowledable guy about mercedes with me to make sure I wasnt making any bad moves hopefully. I drove the car, ran great, tons of power. Love the way it handled. Car was VERY clean, 2 sets of keys, all power worked, only one thing that didnt work was the cigarette lighter when I went to the mb dealership they said right off the bat they thought it was a blown fuse since the backseat cigarette lighters worked. Checked all the fluids, he had a bunch of service records, from dealership and another local mb place that about 50 records or so were in a folder that he had. I went through them and a bunch of stuff was changed and fixed.
So it finally came down to the test drive and seeing all the options and if they worked. The guy did the smog today and it passed easily so after the old man ( he was a bishop for his church, and took very good care of the car and only drove it on long trips to the east coast for conventions) told me he wanted 12,500 for it i told him that I just couldnt afford it earlier he spoke to me on the phone before hand and told me 10,000 would be the absolute lowest he would go(not sure if he was serious) but I decided on buying it. And I can call my self a mercedes owner now. HOpefully its a great experience. By the way 2 married older couples were drooling all over my car and couldnt stop asking me questions about the car at the dealership. Wish me good luck guys. Im hoping for a smooth ride. |
