Thank you for sharing the message and I truely do appreciate it. It does look like a very nice vehicle. However, in my humble opinion, that valuation is entirely unreasonable for an 85 Coupe.

Given it's apparent condition Perhaps 12-14K is more in line with the true realistic value for that particular vehicle if the maintenance and licensing documentation confirms and verifies the mileage. 300CDs are not particularly collectable nor considered a good investment grade auto...just well made.

I am usually as cautious about too low a mileage almost as much as too high because of the attendant issues with infrequent use. As this one is currently represented, I would consider offering maybe up to 10K or so upon test drive and full dealership inspection & systems testing of the vehicle. The low mileage and the California registration actually decrement the value for my purposes and that probably applies to many other potential buyers as well.

With all that said, I suppose I should have made it more clear that I am principally looking for the non-California equipped model. I'm not on a desperate mission...and that one car ain't the only fish in the pond (Although it is good looking). I'll keep looking as there are quite a few good examples on the market.

Does anyone think I'm way out of line here?

The seller of that car probably thinks that you're out of line. He'll probably sell that car to someone. It sure won't be me, and I highly doubt that it will be you, since if he holds onto it for long enough, he'll get double its real value.

You are absolutely correct that I won't be the buyer anywhere near that price. And I am not faulting the seller at all for trying to get as much as the market will bear...It is one good looking, low mileage, old coupe that I would love to have. Heck, I'm tickled pink he did get it from the Rolls Royce Dealer and is offering it up for sale and not just locking it up.

In 1982, I paid $19795.40 cash for a new240D with 4 miles on the odometer and a $29,900 window sticker price. If he discounts that kind of a percentage on the deal, I might reconsider even thought it is a California version and not my favorite combination of color.

I should probably call him to explore whether or not there is wiggle room for negotiating.

Good luck finding a black on black.

Good 85's appear but you need to JUMP on one if you find it. Around here they are gone in minutes.

I have an 84 300cd silver/blk int. It wasn't maintained very well. It is now mechanically sound and painted. No rust, interior is driver quality. It is not perfect, but with continued investment, could make you a good car. I have $4800 invested with receipts. Send a pm if interested. Thanks Bill

I have an '85 300CD-T currently for sale. I currently drive it everyday 50 miles roundtrip. Clean GA title.Have a folder full of records & waiting on original owner to find his "file box full of records /receipts for the car". Very good exterior- Brown with tan interior. New quality paint job 4-5 yrs. ago. Interior is good condition with only a few exceptions, rear seat backrest covering being the biggest problem. It does have high miles, but is not a jalopy in any sense. 384k miles - Yes the odom. works. Recently purchased from the original owner, who took good care of the car. It was purchased in Germany back in 1985, & picked up at the factory. Currently listed on Craigslist- check it out if you wish. Asking price has been reduced to $4900 / Negotiable. Need to sell soon due to financial obligations. Car is located on North side of Atlanta, GA.

Thumbs up Coupes rock

Thanks and good luck...I've seen yours on Craigslist and the body looks straight, although I'm holding out for another that is in great original condition and has not been repainted...

I would however consider taking it off your hands at wholesale if you find no takers at your asking price! PM me in November if you need to liquidate...I'll leave for Europe tomorrow and will not be checking the Web until then.

Good luck, as I'm sure someone will snatch up a nice southern coupe!

Motor on,
