FS: 1991 Mercedes 560SEL, 79k original miles, ridiculous service history. $6750

This is the last car I purchased before getting my dealer's license. So, very sadly, this is likely the last car I will ever be able to post for sale on the forum. I'm going out with a bang, though. With my 300TD project in full swing now, along with another unexpected Cadillac STS long term vehicle/project, this car is not going to get the attention she deserves anymore.

Named snowbird, this '91 560SEL is pretty incredible. Hands down its the nicest MB I've ever owned.

This flagship was purchased new in 1991, the final year of the W126 chassis, by elderly Michigan snowbirds, who kept it at their vacation home in Florida, where they eventually retired. It comes with all the options including front and rear heated seats, ABS, town and country horns, etc, but thankfully lacks the troublesome ASR traction control system. It was kept in the family in 2006, then sold to a neighbor who parted ways with it a few years after. The most recent owner is a pilot, who went through the vehicle with the utmost thoroughness, making it a turn key, like new example. Below I've cataloged the extensive service and repair history done over the last few years.

Engine: Legendary Mercedes specialists, Blue Ridge MB of Atlanta, replaced the timing chain, guides, tensioners and followers. This is a very expensive but necessary maintenance item. All the ignition items, including the plugs, wires, rotor and cap, along with the expensive EZL ignition module. The injection pump was also tuned to give like new performance, along with a new fuel pump relay and filter. New motor mounts create a smooth idle. Fresh oil change on Mobil 1 synthetic.

Transmission/drive train: Transmission serviced using Mobile 1 ATF Tranny fluid. Mobile 1 synthetic in the rear differential as well. New flex discs for the driveshaft.

Cooling system: New Radiator, along with all belts and hoses, and new thermostat. Coolant refreshed with off the shelf Mercedes brand, not the cheap neon green stuff.

Suspension: Completely rebuilt front suspension, including new heavy duty Bilstein shocks, new tie rods, "dogbones"= suspension bearing brackets, upper control arms, ball joings steering dampener, and pittman arm bushings. The rear hydraulic suspension has new accumulators and high pressure lines.

Accessories: New front rotors, along with new ceramic brake pads all around. Newer AC compressor still running on icy cold R12. Tires are Altimax HP directionals with less than 7k on them.

As you can see, the car is ready for another 20 years or 100k miles. Seldom does a car with this low of miles come with this many items out of the way. Everything works on this car, right down to each window, seat adjustment, sunroof, cruise control, and factory stereo system. The only issue worth describing is with the original antenna, which does not retract all the way down when powered off. This is an easy repair, but did not bother me enough to address.

Cosmetically, this 560 really stands out as well. Bosch euro headlamps really make the front clip pop and gives much better night-time visibility over the factory sealed beams. The exterior paint is in excellent condition, with only a few "granny marks" on the corners of the front bumper. There is no rust or oxidation on the car, the paint, chrome, and window seals still gleaming like new. All the paint on the panels appears to be completely original. The interior is free of any cracks on the dash, tears in the upholstery, or fading of the veneer finish on the rich burl wood (rare to see). The leather is still soft and supple. Floor mats are OEM replacements and less than a year old. The instrument needles are still factory carrot stick orange (extremely rare to see).

I'm pricing it here well below my asking price elsewhere to give my bottom dollar to forum members. Obviously its a pretty incredible buy considering this car's pedigree. PM or email if you have any other questions. Thanks for looking. Photos below.

Wichita, KS. I was passing through Baton Rouge a year ago on my second cross country voyage. Nice little drive.

The passenger side of the hood doesn't appear to line up quite right. Is there a story there?

Is there supposed to be a plastic sound pan below the engine compartment? There doesn't appear to be one present.

What compu 85 said... Didn't close the hood well enough for the photo. No way the car has ever been hit there or anywhere else.

I suppose you're right on point 2 though. Many of these cars are missing their underbody panels. If that's a deal breaker for somebody, I can probably locate one. I can't imagine why that would turn anyone off though.

I had a good laugh today with a buyer. He asked why all this work had to be done to the car, and was worried it might be a lemon because it needed so much with so few miles.

Different strokes I guess...

Here is a photo with the hood closed better. It might still be sticking up just a smidge, but obviously better than the original photo shoot.

Congrats!

It's a beautiful car. I'd have loved to have if I had the $$.

The new owner is getting a superb condition car.

Stupidity reigns supreme in America.

Only a total DB would ask you a question like that.....
