87 300D for Sale

Hey everyone!

I listed this on my local craigslist, and figured I would put it up here in case anyone was interested. It has 297,000 miles and going strong. Runs and drives excellent. I am asking $1800 obo on craigslist...I would be plenty happy to get $1500 for it though from the forum. Here is the ad: Mercedes Diesel for Sale

Since the craigslist ad is geared towards the general public...I will give more details here.

I have had the car about 3 years...bought it off a guy who had recently replaced the delivery valve seals, and done a few other minor fixes. He had quite a few receipts including major a/c repair, belt tensioner/shock, etc.

After driving a few months, I noticed the typical cracked head syndrome as you could find if you searched some of my old posts. I found a low mileage #14 head, swapped it, while at the same time doing the other following items:
* upper guide rails
* glow plugs
* rebuilt injectors from another parts website
* new fuel injection clear hard lines from the dealer
* thoroughly flushing the cooling system and replacing with mercedes blue
* resealed the injection pump
* resealed the fuel thermostat
* replaced the front crank seal
* put a new water pump on

It ran great after that, but I still am a perfectionist so here is everything else I worked on:

* new front brake rotors/pads (and repacked front bearings)
* new rear brake rotors/pads and rebuilt rear calipers
* new brake hoses on all 4 wheels
* four new tires
* new lemforder motor mounts
* new sachs belt tensioner/shock assembly
* new serpentine belt
* new behr upgraded fan clutch with larger fan for better cooling
* replaced all fluids (tranny, differential, power steering, brake)
* resealed the power steering pump
* replaced all of the tie rod joints (lemforder) and had a 4 wheel alignment done at the dealer
* upgraded to the newer afterglow system with a new temp sensor etc
* replaced the a/c expansion valve, receiver/dryer, and o-rings at the compressor to manifold seal, evacuated the system and recharged again with r134a. Although I know R12 would be better, it had already been converted prior to me own the car and the cooling was satisfactory for our area.
* replaced the tank strainer
* replaced the sunroof sliding pieces and cable
* added in an aftermarket keyless entry that works with the factory vacuum pump
* replaced the flexible links on the exhaust manifold
* replaced the vacuum pump with the upgraded type
* upgraded to the 94 W124 headlights (can see much better at night)
* turned out the alda a couple of turns
* added in a factory block heater
* replaced the caps in the cruise control board and re soldered all of the connections - seems to work fine
* disassembled and thoroughly lubricated the monowiper
* cleaned the a/c evaporator and lubricated the blower motor
Probably some other things that I am forgetting...

The cons (since I know you guys are as picky as I am):
* the paint is really starting to let go
* I am guessing it was in a minor fender bender at some point...the hood lines are not quite right.
* the front driver's side fender has a slight dent in it...I have a spare fender I will include with the car if anyone planned on getting a paint job.
* the driver's seat MB Tex has some wear (can be seen on craigslist pictures)
* the sunroof slide works fine...but it binds when tilting (due to the interior sunroof head panel having some issues). I never bothered to fix since I read that the tilt feature is what causes these guide jaws to break anyways.
* the passenger front power window is slow to go down
* one injector has a slight nailing that comes and goes...as long as I keep a lubricity additive in the diesel it does not do it.
* the factory radio was not in the car when I got it...has an aftermarket unit in it which the radio and aux input works on...but the cd does not work
* the power antenna works, but the gear makes a slipping noise when fully retracted...hasn't given up in the 3 years I have owned it so I haven't fixed it
* the front crank seal might be weeping a tiny bit again...nothing to even lose sleep over....just want to give a realistic picture of the car.

I did all of that work because I was planning on making this a long term keeper...but we got a good deal on another much newer car, and I need the money from this sale to finish fixing our low mileage S500 which my wife hit a deer with.

This would make a great daily driver...we have taken many trips in it as well. It spent most of its life in NC....so rust is very minimal. I see some slight bubbling around the jack points. Underneath is surprisingly clean. The front inside of the rear wheel wheels has some rust on the very bottom. I can not think of anything else to tell you guys about the car. Feel free to ask me any questions and I will do my best to answer them.

Tim

Great description...thanks for your thoroughness! My daughter is in Charlottesville...if you still have it next time I'm down there, maybe I'll snag it. Impressed with all the work you've put into it!
