Is there any performance upgrades for my '87 300TD that will help the turbo lag? Seems to take a few seconds/revs to get going, but once its going it flys.
The car is new to me and haven't change fuel/air filters yet. Anything else? Jason |

On the 1987 300D's there is a update mode to remove the trap oxydizer. If this hasn't been done then it's probably the problem.

I think it has been done. The M-B dealer says I'm up on all recalls. I remember reading something in this forum that I may be starting off in 2nd gear. Gone to do a search...

Upgrade your exhaust to 3". Turbo's need to breathe and the larger diameter exhaust sys. will definantly help your turbo spool up quicker. Also, for more performance, get an electronic boost controller and crank the boost up a little bit.

I would be careful on the things Clinton has to offer. The hold true on the gas models, but I would not turn up the boost on my D.
You can get a good tech to turn up the anaroid a little. This will increase the smoke and fuel consumption a little, but will greatly reduce turbo lag and off the line performance.

It may be a little stressful on the engine to crank up the boost, but at least a larger diameter exhaust would definantly help with the spool up time wouldn't it? Unless a turbo diesel is a different set up than a gas turbo. Well, later.

A new fuel filter helped a little. The turbo lag is not as bad when the engine is warm....so I can live with that.

I drove an '87 once, briefly. Compared to my '85 there was NO LAG!
Jason, did you (or your tech) check the wastegate (boost) pressure and compare it to specifications? I remember reading that MB diesel turbos start out with proper boost, but the wastegate spring gets tired over the years and you no longer get full "factory" boost. It's a simple test, and if your wastegate blowoff pressure is low, it may only take an adjustment to restore "factory" boost. That would be a solution that can't overstress the motor lower end or cost $$$ in add-on or replacement parts. Good luck, and let us know. BCingU, Jim |
