Well I know this question kind of does not belong amongst the 500E posts and RennTech questions but I wanted to know if the 126 300SD enjoys a performance advantage over the W116 300SD? They both have the same great engine making the same amount of horsepower and torque. According to the February 1980 edition of Road & Track the W126 has a drag coefficient of .36 as opposed to .41 for the W116, and the W126's are between 400 and 600 lb. lighter the the equivalent W116 model. So does this add up to a superior top speed (110mph for w116) and acceleration?

I have had my fathers 79 300SD at 120 mph on a certain open road over here in N.Y. Smooth as silk at that speed.

I remember test driving the 116 SD when they came out. The salesman was pretty enthusiastic about the car. He took it up to 60 mph, panic stopped with his hands off the wheel, and the car stayed in the lane. The handling, if I can remember that far back, was pretty good, though not as tossable as the W108 body style. The salesman demonstrated this by doing a slalom between roadside markers, half on concrete, half on grass. Took it up to 90 mph (on the test drive!) and it was rock solid at that speed.

The 126 gives you power seats and a more reliable climate control system. The 116 transmissions seem to be more reliable. Most 126 owners get a new tranny at some point before 250K miles.

Hope this helps,
