Air Intake Modification
Hi eveyone,
I have a 300CE-24 and i'm considering modifiying the air intake system by removing the existing intake system and having a pipe running lower down with a pod filter or similar on the end. The car currently has an exhaust system so its not fully stock so im woundering if this will make any difference at all. Does anyone have any advice or has done something similar before? I have seen a 300 M103 with it done but you can really tell the diff. Any help would be great, if i should leave it then thats fine too. Cheers, Beernut |

Yes, it will make a difference. The extra induction noise will possibly create the impression that it is performing better. The fact that it is drawing hot air from within the engine bay will in reality probably see a drop in performance. The M103 and M104 3 litre with KE injection had a very generous air intake at around 80mm diameter drawing cold air from behind the grill. I believe the greatest restriction to intake air flow on these engines is the flap in the air flow meter. My question early in this thread related to the M104 with HFM injection (3.2 & 2.8 litre) which have what seems in comparison a very small intake of just 50mm diameter drawing cold air from a cover behind the right hand headlight. I was wondering how these engines performed so well with such a small intake and whether the 3.6 AMG versions provided anything more generous. Greg

e36 amg air intake diameter!!
Quote:
hi, are you sure about the above inatke being bigger diameter? as i have bought my cars 2nd hand just last year! so i dont know if they were original but i suspect the are. i have the e36 amg and my wife has the c280 both engines are the m104 and these inatke tubes are identical! i have seen other 3.6 engines and they have the 3.6 lettering on the intake tube, where as mine doesnt! i have heard of the plastic boot breaking apart and thats probably why its been repalced! but the car as loads of power! put my foot down all the way upto 40mph and the car just wheel spins. and seems to take off when i put my foot down on the motroway. but now after reading your post im starting to think that the intake tube as been replaced with the standard one and that may be its too small! cant be any difference in power mind you! this car is fast ![]() any reassurace would be much appreciated! thanks paul |
