I sent them an email requesting information about what kits were available for the 94-95 E420's. With any luck, I'll hear back from them!

Vroom!

Hey Doc,

In Vancouver, BC, there is this mod shop called Boom Plus Toys that recently accepted a job to custom install a Turbonetics T3/T4 Hybrid Twin-Turbocharger into a M-B CLK430 with full Lorinser bodykit and 19" Brabus wheels. The same twin-turbocharger can most definitely be applied to the M119 V8 also! Here is the Turbonetics page with the T3/T4 Hybrid Twin-Turbocharger:

http://www.turbocharged.com/catalog/t3t4.html

Also, would you please be kind enough to share the info that Koenig-Specials passes on to you? I E-mailed them, but they never E-mailed me back! I think it was because I started off my E-mail with "WuZZZZZZZZZZZuP"...I guess they don't have Budweiser commercials in Munich...oh well...

I also sent them an email asking about details for an install in a 1992 400E. We'll see if they answer. I'll let you know.

Most of these upgrade kits are very "do-able" for the N. American market, the real problem is in Octane, as in we don't have any over here.

I think the typical boost levels in N.A. are only 6-8 psi for these kits without changing compression level, it's sad that you are loosing a lot of potential performance because of available fuels.

What a shame! In Europe higher octanes are available but at a higher cost, in N. American I think the highest you will find is 94 (excluding race and aviation fuels).

Has anybody seen higher?

What are the subtle differences between a supercharger and a turbo/twin turbo (in practical driving situations)? Is it the "lag" time for the turbo's to kick in, which the super charger doesn't have?

Is the turbo cheaper than the supercharger? And is the supercharger also better, especially with the intercooler?

Just wondering which way to go if I decide to add some extra horsepower, and if the supercharger is worth the money. Or either one for that matter.

Thank to all!

brianw,

I'm no techy...but I'll try to help! From the information I gathered, the twin-turbocharger that I mentioned above is a custom install, and cost approximately $40,000CAN, so around $27,000US...as u probably already know, turbo spins the fan by using your exhaust gas to spin one side, while supercharger uses your crank to spin the fan. I think a turbocharger has greater potential for power than a supercharger though. However, as you mentioned, turbo has lag, while u wait for the exhaust gas to get flowing... but superchargers are getting much more efficient...so they're about the same recently. To solve the problem of lag with turbochargers, the install that I mentioned is a twin-turbocharger meaning that there are two turbos...u get one small one and one big one...the small one spins up quick, and gives you some boost at low RPM's and the big one just pushes tons of air once you get the engine rev'd up. It decreases any lag you have at low RPM's with a single big turbo unit. I think the turbo/supercharger setup probably isn't quite as good as the beloved bored out engine or engine swap techniques that almost every M-B tuner follows...I think a bored-out engine gives you better power response throughout the entire rev range and a more "refined" power output...while a turbo/supercharger will give you a massive power surge above a certain RPM...in terms of cost...I was comparing the cost of the turbocharger/supercharger vs. the bored out engine that RENNTech offers, and I think the turbocharger is around $5000US or so cheaper than the 6.0 V8 conversion for E420 for approximately the same gain in power. I think the Koenig-Specials supercharger is cheaper by about the same amount also. You can also go with the option of dropping a Brabus 7.3L V12 or the Koenig-Specials 7.3L V12 (this one has 580hp) engine into your car, but this would make your frontend heavy...but with that much power...sheesh...I could carry an elephant in the back seat...

Thanks for clearing that up DuckMuck, but at $27,000 on top the cost of the auto, I'll wait and trade up to the awe-inspiring 500E/E500! Or maybe by the time I'm ready to replace the 400E some of the CLK55/E55's will be at the same age as my 400E is now. That should keep me giddy for a while!

Subman, I posted more info about the kit and link to actual page at http://www.benzsport.com under Engine Tuning -> Superchargers, in reply to brianw...they actually have specifications and price for the engine upgrade for specifically E420:

E420
308 KW / 420 HP / 560 NM
price incl. installation: (EUR 19.940,70) DM 39.000,–
kit price: (EUR 14.827,70) DM 29.000,–

NOTE that this is for W210 E420, and not W124 E420, but the M119.975 engine in both of them are the same, so the price should be pretty accurate, and the power output is probably what you will be getting. I dunno what is the conversion factor for EUR/DM to US dollar though...
