This is an exerpt from a conversation I had with Kim Crumb noted Porsche 928 guru.
I have a Mercedes 400e(V8)and was asking what components from the 928's exhaust I would need to get that beautiful Porsche purr from my own V8Mercedes. My tail pipe exits from the drivers side and so I wondered if all 928 mufflers/silencers were configured to exit from the right side.
I offer this as a thought provoking statement to anyone who has/is considering modifying the exhaust of their Car in any way.

Albert: They both (928S4 and GT)have their exit on the driver's
side. It's just the the passenger's side exhaust takes
a more circuitious route, going around the transaxle.
I suspect there is some tuning in the size and the
where in the exhaust system...some of it based on the
helmholtz resonator principle. The only difference
between the GT and the S4 is the the components used
that I mentioned, their are still positioned in the
same place(s.) I caution you that while I'm sure you
can make it louder, you might lose horsepower if the
"tuning" design I allude to above is ineffective. Kim

Interesting that you would mention 928 and Mercedes V8 in the same thought. The relationship between Porsche and MB has been a productive one on the performance end of the spectrum. The 'guts' of the first automatic trans in the 928 were sourced from the MB 6.9 automatic, we all know about the 500E joint venture, and (on point to your discussion) it is said that AMG used dual 928 catalysts in its free flow exhaust for high-output, mid-80s MBZ V8s.
