Question to the street racers. Why do you think the car you are racing is giving it's all? The reason I ask, (i look fo rthe post on these MBZ boards) I friend of mine and I where driving down I5 last night about 10pm, doing about 80mph in a very tuned M3 (3.6L, cam, exhaust, TB, filter, chip, and nitrous. A e500 passed us, we sped up passed him, at about 120mph, Jason let the 500 pull away. I'm sure the e500 driver thought he had killed the little M3. While I don't know if the E was tuned of not, and what the end result would have been had J really jumped on it. How do you know the other guy is really going for it, or gives up with a little grin as he backs off? |

I think it is well known to the driver if a real race is "on" or not.
Usually eye contact is made first and besides, what is the use for you two to follow and risk the ticket if you are not going to race??? |

Roas,
Let me rephrase the question. How do you know the other guy is giving it his all? Sure it is know to one driver but maybe not the other, in this instance Jason did'n thit it hard becuase he wanted to save the remaining shots in the NOS bottle. I'm not looking to get flamed it's an honest question, you must agree a lot of the "kills" that appear on this and other boards could not occur if the drivers of both cars gave it 100% except for complete driver incompetence. |

Sorry to come off with a "hard tone".
You really can't tell unless you know before hand or flag him over after the race. Where on I-5? |

Floatinghat,
The answer is you don't know, but the bottom line is the driver who backs off loses, period. In this case, the E500 pilot thinks he got the kill and can write about it on his/her favorite board. Your friend, wisely decided to let it go at 120 MPH. End of story. |

Roas, no offense taken. Just south of Portland OR, the E had CA plates, Jason is from Vancouver B.C. area
Glen, thanks for clarifing my point "thinks" he got the kill. |

floatinghat,
What kind of Benz, do you have? You don't know unless you speak to the driver after the race. Unless the driver is obviouse in showing his slowdown, by stepping on the brakes etc. what kind of tricks does your friend have in his M3, aside from what was listed. What kind of power is he making? 0-60's 1/4's etc. We love this stuff.

I have a 2nd owner 71' w113 with 51K, (I'm the second owner I bought the car from family). Hardly a fast or great handling car. However, I don't think many cars look better.
0-60 is from his mouth best 4.87 on a cool day, 12.3 @ 114, the car has been dyno'd at 307 at the wheels w/o the NOS. It has coil overs and brembos that about finished the list. In my mind the two most impressive aspects of the car are the amazing torque and the way it sticks in the twisties. It lacks the refinement of the and the sleeper look of the E but it is a screamer. hat |

Nice Classic, at first you sounded like a straggling Bimmerowner to me. J/K
Can the car really do 0-60 in 4.87 ? What year is your buddies Bimmer. By any chance is it Yellow?

Floatinghat,
In my book anytime both drivers "go for it" it's a race. The one who blinks (or backs off) loses. How about this one, we'll call it a "race", 1977 Porsche 924 versus a 1985 Crown Victoria. The "track", a twisty rural two lane, semi mountainous road, speeds up to 115-120 MPH. Who won? I did in the 85 Crown Vic. I knew the road better had the line down pat and he oversteered in a curve, leaving the roadway. That race was won, and we started a new race, this time a foot race. I won again. It's not always what's under the hood. You have to factor in what the guy (or gal) behind the wheel knows and how well he/she knows it.

We would have heard it here at MercedesShop first if it was a real race! The E500 owner was probably just loafing along at a comfortable cruising speed, and barely noticed the red bmw.

I know that many E36 M3's in Vancouver have had their 3.0L inline-6 bored out to 3.2L with various other upgrades to match the Euro M3 specs...however, I've never heard of an E36 M3 bored out to 3.6L. Can I ask who did this job? Was it done by Boom Plus Toys? Thank you...

No fare Mike!
You had those nifty red and blue flashing lights on the roof and the custom paint job that was helping!
It is definetly the driver that is the most important component of the car when it comes to being fast on the street! |

Awww Ross
Those lights only made that young feller want to go faster, which of course made the "race" a little more exciting.
But you picked up my point, a good driver in a slower car can often beat a much faster car with a less skilled driver. I tell you, on the straights I had a hard time closing to 1/4 mile, but in the curves , he'd brake, I wouldn't and when the road opened up, I was right there behind him.
