Have you checked the dimensions of a Volvo radiator? Check out IPD in Portland (they have a site).

2-2-08 Exhaust Sucks
Not moving too fast with this exhaust work. It's cut check recut check, remove down pipe and tack one more piece in place. Reinstall down pipe and repeat process about 20 times. I completed the right side down pipes and am about to make the connection between cat and down pipes.
You know I mocked these up in steal earlier but didn't concentrate on getting all pipes even, at the same level and running parallel. It really is a quantum bit more difficult when you try to make everything all neat and parallel and get 4 pipes coming down to the same height. Building the subframe took longer but this is the most difficult part of the job so far. Especially when trying to do a neat job. I'm too sick of the radiator to even think about that yet. Besides, surely its not the amount of horsepower that's the measure, but how efficiently the heat is managed? The pipes look nice, though.

It is true that hp does not necessarily translate directly to radiator size, but if the car has twice the horsepower the liklihood of the radiator being adequate is probably remote.

2-9-08 Exhaust Still Sucks
I completed basic tack welding of the exhaust system to the cats. I still need to tack in the O2 sensor bungs and I have to complete the reconstruction of the cats. It may not look like much but this was 16 hours of work just for today. The left side also needs to be tweeked a little. All I can say is if I ever have to do this again I will rent a trailer and tow it down to Pypesmith. All day long that Irish tune "Danny Boy" was going threw my head except I was changing the name to "Johnny Boy".

Time to bite the bullet
Gentlemen
Getting time to light this bad boy. Were onto the last and final frontier. Well actually I'm still working the rad issue, but it's under control and I expect it to be done long before this battle. It's all down to the wire, I'm ready to rock John Roncallo |

The Wiring Task From Hell
We begin this battle by laying out the harnesses sort of in the way they were originally mounted in the SL600. First picture shows three of the 6 or so harnesses involved.
The forward most harness is the one that I will be using at least 90% of. It extends to all on car sensors. It goes to everything firewall forward except the engine itself. For the moment I have things like headlights and horn tied up. I will be trying not to be evasive to this harness unless I absolutely have to. That may have to happen as I will need to pass some of this harness through the firewall. Having the lights and horn out would be a help. The middle harness. This is what I'm calling the power distribution harness. It contains stuff like the ignition switch DAS wiring. This particular harness, I expect to use very little of. Essentially I will be making the 560SL harness do the critical tasks of this harness. The last harness is the ADS harness. This harness along with its associated computer, I'm hoping I can just put up for sale on E-bay. Otherwise I will have to do something stupid like hook up all the sensors to it and put them all under the seat. The second picture is all the computers I need to find a place for. There are 2 engine computers one for each side, One Basic computer, one ESP computer and an ADS computer. I'm hoping to be able to eliminate the ADS computer and use the ESP computer as an option at a later date. The third pictures is parts of the original 560SL engine harness. It is an example of how some of the decisions need to be made. In my hand is the idle control, fuel pump relay and AC compressor relay. Which of these circuits am I going to give to the SL600 harness and which will stay 560SL. It may seam like a no brainer at the moment but things could change due to unexpected MB BS. I will be using the fuel pump and idle control from the SL600. I will have to make from scratch the AC compressor circuit. The fourth picture is the first pass at mounting one engine computer. It was no good. It interfeard with the evaporator. Next step will be to fabricate more brackets and try again. Placing these two computers will be a challenge, I also have to cool them. The last picture is the car chassis main wire harness. It is the biggest harness of all. It is the biggest wire harness Ive seen any where. Fortunately I only need a few sub harnesses from it. Those are wheel speed, and fuel pump. I may also need the ESP stuff. There are two other harnesses which are not shown. The main engine harness which is already installed and the transmission harness which is not going to be a challenge. John Roncallo |

Best of luck with all the wiring. I cant wait to see this thing! -Chris |

I can't wait until this thing works!
I've been watching with interest since the start but had to chip in.

Some times I just cant help myself
After seeing you wrapped up in the wire harness I got this song stuck in my head.
IO IO its off to work I go. ![]() If sticking the ADS sensors under the seat makes it all work I would call that a smart move not stupid. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. You are getting so close to the end I can almost smell the tires burning. We are all waiting ![]() |
