Group buy cancelled.

Evidently the Remus distributor in NJ that set helped set up the group buy got impatient and annoyed that five people couldn't be found (only myself and one other) to pay in full.

They may be available later, but the price will be over $1,000 it seems - if it is available at all. Check their website or contact the distributor if interested

Meanwhile I went out on my own and found perhaps the last OEM 560SEC Remus muffler there was and I bought it.

It should be at my door tomorrow, and (insured, shipped and bought for a total of well less than $1,000, and it turns out I knew the seller from years ago on mbcoupes.com days, so the trust level is high, and we know many SEC fanciers in common.)

I have found a Remus exhaust tuner near the SF airport who said he could do the install, but $118 ph for 2 hours, and a round trip of 500 miles doesn't appeal (though the return , with the new muffler on, certainly does!)

Or maybe I should find a good local store in Sacramento for cheaper? What do you think?

Not a hard install, so long as the cut to the pipe in made in the correct place.
the collars are already there.

I have a Remus on my E500. If you want an idea of how it sounds (with the middle muffler also removed), check out the vidoes of my dyno runs here... #4 and #5 are closest to the exhaust:

http://www.w124performance.com/movies/Mercedes/dyno/94_E500/

FWIW, a guy on the 500Ecstasy.com forum (Terry) is trying to get a GB going for the 500E/E500 Remus muffler, directly from Remus (not the unauthorized dealer in Australia). Turned out to be $1399 each including shipping to the USA... but the hard part is getting 10 people interested. So far I don't think he's been able to scrounge up enough serious buyers. Man, I'm glad my car came with it already installed!

I have had mine on for almost 2 weeks, and couldn't be happier with the look, sound, and performance.

Install day at the Remus dealer down by San Francisco airport. www.toplineautomobile.com

Jim, do you like the sound of the Remus exhaust? I was listening to Powerpig's the other day and was expecting a deeper, more throaty sound.

That's my biggest complaint..We have one on the 91 ECE and it's really a very tame sounding setup.. Personally, I like to KNOW there's a V8 under the hood;-)

As an aside, I'm looking to re-manufacture the AMG boxes for 124's and 126's in the coming year (Have one of each to pattern off of). They will be full stainless, same internal technology and mandrel bend (the original AMG boxes had compression bends..).

I'll be around w/ pricing once I get it nailed down.

see thats my complaint as well. I'm shopping around for an exhaust for the new SEC, because I want it to sound like it's got the engine that its got in it :)

After driving Powerpigs CE's around for a few weeks, yeah the sound is neat but it only sounds a little better than the typical fartcan you hear on ricers, albeit coming on loud only after getting above 3500-4k. Granted its a 6cyl, but still... This one which is remus, doesnt have the whole box, it's just one pipe that splits into two and has the perforated inner pipes and the standard square Remus tips. I wouldn't necessarily call that one a "muffler" in the sense that the one for the 126 is.

Cool. Maybe by the time you put that together, I'll have something to put it on.:D

If you really want something that will Snarl @ you, install a set of high flow cats along w/ a Magnaflow dual in dual out. You'll like it;-)

I'll keep ya'll updated on the muffler project..!

I will hopefully be in the market for an exhaust system soon for my M120 107. The construction of the car limits me to 1 muffler. I would like to find a very thin but high performance cat 2.5", 2 in 2 out. And a nice muffler that will be quiet at cruise and have a nice deep, Italian tone under load.

How did the v8 and straight six boxes differ? Which ones do you have?

jhodg5ck 02-18-2008 11:44 PM

I have V8 boxes for the 126 and 124. I'm going to venture to say that you can run a V8 box on a I6 etc w/o issue.

Who do you plan on using to remanufacture them? I'd love to get one when they become available.

jhodg5ck 02-19-2008 10:20 AM

I plan on using myself and a few key resources that I have put together during my travels:)

John, we'll keep you in mind..where do you plan on mounting the muffler, stock location or..?

Jonathan

EliotW 02-19-2008 12:09 PM

As stock as possible. I'm mounting the second generation W124 AMG body kit. The install guide from the WIS simply suggest using longer hangers to accommodate the muffler.
