Help, When I purchased my 92 500E it had the std 8 x 16 but they had been chromed. They looked okay but the chrome is pitting badly and is peeling in some places. I have a set of AMG Monoblocks that I purchased as take offs and had them refinished. The problem is they are 17x7.5 and they do not look or feel right on the car. Too much space in the fenderwells and the offset is different from the std ( 1.33 versus 1.35 I think). I am looking for a combination that will maintain the std tire height ( or close to it) and not give up the contact patch. I love the look and quality of the AMG wheels but I have other mods I want to do. I know that there are copy cat wheels that look like the AMG product but most of them that I have seen are cast and not forged. HELP!!!.
Alan

Hey Beastie: AMG monoblocks are cast too, not forged. I have a year-old set of RH Alurad monoblock replicas (as sold by Bekkers) in 17x8 fronts and 17x9 rears that are guaranteed to fill up yer wheel wells! Drop me a line if you're interested.

I have the same pitting problem on my 16x8 chromed eight-hole original wheels. I just took them off and mounted a set of 17x8.25 Evo II wheels from Bekkers (through my local tire store - they charged me the advertised internet price). According to the description, they have an offset of 34mm (1.339 in.). They look great and "belong" on the car, since they were sold on the 1994 E500 Limited Edition in Europe. I mounted 245/45-17 Bridgestone Potenza S03's. That size calculates out to 2.5mm (0.1") smaller than the original size of 225/55-16 - well within the range of normal tire wear variation, and also the OEM size on the "Limited". They fill the wells quite nicely and give the car a nice stance. I don't plan to lower the car, but it looks like it could be done, if that's what you like.

One little glitch - Bekker's advice was not accurate on the lug bolts. I had lug bolts with the stem extension on my 16x8 eight-holes. Bekker's advised that they would be the right ones for the Evo II's. Not so - the new wheels require shorter bolts.

I've only driven the car about 60 miles with the new set, but my initial impression: SMOOOOOOOTH! A slight sacrifice in ride quality - barely noticeable on LA freeway strips, etc., but a great tradeoff for the improved steering response and true-running wheels.

Thanks to David Hendy and this forum for the recommendation on the Evo II's!

EuroParts Xpress will sell you a set of EVO IIs at $276.00 per wheel. Contact Michael Arnoux michael@europarts.com.

I just bought a set. I have them on my SL500 already (came stock that way) and really look forward to putting them on my 500E. THe E had chrome 8 holes on it when I bought it in 97 and I put the factory silver 8 holes on it. Still have the chrome if anyone is interested in them.

One ptoblem with chrome oem rims is they are not chromed from the factory due to the chrome not adhering to the alloy wheels. thats why they dont chrome in germany, its a safety concern over there and they wont allow it on rims. since the chrome will peel in time it can cause a leak and your tires may go flat without you knowing it. thought that might help you with your pitting problem.

I have AMG 5 spoke wheels, 17" by 8.5" on my car. They are currently referred to as "129" on the TireRack website. The site doesn't do this particular application justice, as the rims have a nice fat polished lip since, being quite wide, they're a bit dished. You can see a picture that Dean was kind enough to host on his site.

Your car looks fabulous, Guido! Matter of fact I was parked next to a Silver Arrow at the Greenwich Concours several weeks back, and thought those were very attractive rims. What did the owner replace them with??

Probably 16" OE 15 holers

ItalianBenz,

Just put a / in front of the last img tag, like [/img] and it should work.

Nice look.

Guido,
Great looking wheels. You've convinced me that 18's are the way to go! Hopefully I can upgrade in the near future...

hmm

Hi Glen I hope you get those 18s . Mike Im not sure why the guy would even get rid of such a nice wheel. But as they say one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Ok 500E brothers hope to see some cool stuff happening at this 500E/E500 Hot Rod Site.
