If you think a M117 in a 107 is tight, the M120 in an R129 is even worse... Though not as bad as the M120 in a W124..!! The M119 in the 124 was pushing the limits of there still being room to service the engine!

Why not put a supercharger on your current engine? It's cheaper, easier and sort of plug and play.

On the other hand, gas is expensive. You choose.

I've been getting stuff together for the last couple of years to do this swap, was going to megasquirt the M120 but managed to buy a complete running 1992 600SEL for cheap so will use the factory system to begin with.

I bought a 1992 300CE-24 with the 5 speed auto and 3.69 rear gear with low kms and no reverse for $800, body and interior are in very good shape. The previous owner couldn't get it running after sitting for a few months after reverse went out and it was going to get towed by the city. Engine runs great and as long as the car is going forward the transmission does very well, firm shifts at the 7,000 rpm redline. I'll probably save this drivertrain for another swap later and rebuild the transmission.

I purchased an M120 and the 4 speed auto from a wrecking yard with the intent of going through both before starting the installation. A leakdown of the M120 makes me suspect that the yard turned the engine backwards while removing it and bent a few valves. Not a huge setback as I was planning on porting it so it was going to come apart. The wiring harness is definitely the biodegradable one with lots of bare copper and crumbling insulation. Again, not a problem as I'd be redoing the harness anyway.

I've already rebuilt the non-electronic 4 speed, it looked good but much easier to do it now than later. Things go slowly because this is a personal project. I have a shop that builds race cars and hot rods which sounds good but I have to make time and room before my stuff gets worked on.

The '92 600SEL popped up in the local buy and sell, another distressed car with numerous issues but the drivetrain runs very well and the factory EFI is complete. If I end up going to the megasquirt, I'll sell the ECUs and stuff to pay for the MS. I recently stripped an '85 500SEC for parts (it was nasty) and am saving the 2.24 LSD diff and axles for use in this project. No overdrive but this should make for good highway cruising and reasonable fuel economy, all things considered. Tempted to keep the 3.69 gear handy for the drags but I suspect that it would make more tire smoke than forward motion.

Present weight of the 300CE-24 is 3454lbs with half a tank of fuel so expecting that the final weight will be around 3700-3800 when the swap is done. I eventually plan to do equal length headers and a nice exhaust with electric cut-outs so I can have the shriek of the V12 when I feel like it without having to live with it every day.

The final combo: 1992 600CE-48 (300CE-24 x 2) with the factory EFI system and 4 speed non-electronic transmission with a 2.24 LSD diff. Should be the easiest path.

That would be very cool. Please Start a new thread on your project in "Restoration Projects & Long-Term Builds" area.

It'll be a little while before I can get started but when I do, I'll do that.
