Best Shocks for Lowered 94 E420??

I know the topic has been beaten to death but I would like to know what are the best shocks for my 94 E420. I have been thinking about either Bilstine Sport, Koni adjustable, and I have heard the Bilstine HD's are good. I would like a comparison if possible. I am open to any other brands (kyb ect..). Oh yea and the car is lowered using Eibach.
Thank You
Subman

I have Bilstein Sports on mine which is extensively modified to E500 specs, absent self-leveling.

I've also got a E420 with Eibach Sport Springs, and just received my Bilstein Sport Shocks today. They're getting installed this weekend, so I'll keep you posted on how different things are after.

Other mods I've done to the car:
17" Monoblocks
ATE Slotted Rotors
Stainless Steel Brake Lines

Dr. Julio Fuentes-

Just the man I want to talk to!

I just bought a set of 17" AMG Monoblocks for my 'new' '94 E420. I mounted a set of Kumho 225/45/17's on them. The problem is, the front passenger tire is rubbing on the fender occasionally. The tire shop wants to shave metal off the rims. I really don't want them to do that to 2 week old rims. I've been given a different story from every tire person I talk to.

What size tires are on your AMG's? Thanks for the help.

Craig

PS. I also want to change the springs on my E420, but with the rubbing that's going on now, there's no way.

YArgh.... just got done writing a big reply to you, and then when I tried to hit the back button to edit my preview it gave me a PAGE EXPIRED error. AAAGH!!!!

I don't really feel like typing everything all over again, so here's an old article with pictures and all the info you'll need about my tires/rims, etc.

My E420 with rims, tires, and springs.. in pictures!

Notice these are 225-45-17 Bekkers Replicas, with a 35mm offset. Now there's no rubbing... I think the problem I mentioned n the above link was due to a defective tire... it blew shortly thereafter and hasn't rubbed at all since replacing it. If you're experiencing a rubbing problem, you'd either have to roll the inside of the fender lip a bit, or run a 215-50-17 tire. What is the offset of your AMG's, and what step spring pad are you using?

2 more days till Bilsteins!

My AMG's are 35mm offset, I'm told. I haven't taken them off to look. I was tild that it is stamped on the inside. I'm not sure of the spring pads, they are stock. I haven't even looked under there.

I looked at Bekkers, but I found the AMG's cheaper.

I'm going to read the thread now.

Thanks,

Craig

Dr. Julio Fuentes-

According to your thread, I'm running the correct tire. Hmmmm, not sure why why its rubbing.

I guess if I get springs that lower the car a bit but are stiffer, it might not lead to more rubbing.

Just curious, but what is the rim width of your AMG's? According to TireRack.com the ones they sell are 7.5" (same as my Bekkers), but I've also seen others with 8" and 9" widths. I'd suspect that would be the culprit in the rubbing if the offset is 35mm"...... 225's on 7.5" seems to be the limit for the W124 wheel wells, and a 8" rim would most likely cause problemos in the front.

I was told that they are 7.5"s all around. Performance Products told me their computer said to put 7.5's in the front and 8.5" in the rear, but that won't do anything for the rubbing in the front.

I'm not really sure about any of the numbers because I bought the car from an MB dealer 3 weeks ago and took it directly to a wheel/tire shop and had the rims put on. I had a purchase order from the dealer because they were included in the loan. The wheel/tire ship didn't give me a detailed receipt, only a copy of the purchase order that said "4 AMG rims and tires"

Allright... just got back from the mechanics shop with the Bilstein Sports. First overall impressions are very good... nice tight feel, with ZERO body roll or dive. It just corners, period. Ride quality wasn't really compromised... that's what you get with quality stuff... "firm, but not stiff", as my mechanic said it. I'll write more after I try driving around in different weather conditions and have a chance to test the limits a bit more.
Craig... one question about your springs... are they Eibach Sports or Pro's? From what I understand the Sports drop the car about 1 1/4", while the Pro's drop it almost 2". Just curious...

Hmmm... Craig, I dunno what to tell ya. I just got back from a more extensive driving test of the new Bilstein Sports, and I think I'm in love. The car just doesn't squat or roll now, and steering response on the freeway is definitely tighter. Subman, if you're still listening to this thread, go get yourself some Bilstein Sports to compliment those Eibach Springs you have... you won't be disappointed.

Shouldn't be seeing any rubbing-something else is awry.

Before you proceed, I recommend you have a trusted, knowledgeable MBZ tech take a look.

And Doc F., Congrats!!
