Need to consider conversion options

Guys,

I'm having enormous problems sourcing a good replacement M103 engine for my 300E project. Turns out my workshop goofed up & they never received the replacement one from Merc Spares I paid for. All I have is original engine replaced with bad compression on 1 cylinder.

I have been advised against rebuilding this old engine due to The M103 engines had a special metallurgical process applied to the engine block cylinder linings. Thus. Boring it out is less than optimal.

Similar story I gather with the alloy V8's, as one member from a forum here states: "The alloy block is a nikasil process on the bores, and cannot be redone locally with any degree of accuracy or quality as one member states"

My question therefore now is can I use another engine? From a newer model perhaps? M104? 4.5L V8? If so. What are the modifications I need to make? I need to be able to couple it to the 722.3 trans I have had rebuilt ($2750 later inc the torque converter)

Basically how it sits now. I have a car with no engine What can I do?
