I live in Southeast Florida and while I was waiting in traffic, and not waiting too long, the temp on the outside digital temp guage went up to 107, the temp guage in the instrument cluster also went up---is this dangerous>>>> could the engine overheat?

G-Tech results

OK, here are some preliminary results of a test to determine whether the resistor removal has any real effect.

First, the car. My car is a 1992 400E. Bone stock except for the stereo. No K&Ns, nothing. The 17" monobloks won't go back on for another couple of weeks, so I'm running the stock 15" eight-holes with Michelin greens in stock size. I always run premium fuel, and the car has all factory recommended service - on time and up to date. It has 102K on the odo.

Test conditions: 40F outdoors, car warmed up with coolant temp at 70C. Half tank of 93 octane fuel. 200 pound driver (but it looks good on me!).

I only had time to make a couple of runs with and without, so more testing is required for definitive results. So - here are the results for 0 to 60MPH times as reported by the G-Tech:

All runs were clustered between 6.40 and 6.51 seconds with no statistical difference between runs with and without the resistor. Runs were made in both directions on pavement to account for any differences in gradient. Incidentally, the fastest run was 6.40 with the resistor and the slowest was 6.51 without the resistor.

The advance of timing should make the most difference at high RPMs, so it is possible that the resistor removal will make a difference in quarter-mile times. When I have more time I will make a few runs and record quarter mile times. Best results will be five runs with and five runs without; discard the best and worst times for each condition and then average the middle three and compare the averages.

In the meantime - preliminary results look like NBD!

Ray.

NO REPLIES YET TO MY QUESTIONS

I've asked 3 legitimate questions and so far no answers. Not very helpful here.

Emr0591,
Horsepower gains will vary with engine condition you have to experiment. as for your temprature sitting in traffic, 107 deg. C is not dangerous 200 deg. C !! shut down!! Is your auxilary fan working properly? Your cooling system may need a flush. Which color antifreeze are you running? your fan clutch may also need to be replaced.
Good luck!

EMR,

I know nothing about the 300E. I'm talking about a 560 motor. Yes, 5HP max, only in the low rev ranges, infinite resistor (remove resistor).

No need to get prissy, I don't check back here often, since time is limited.

EMR,

Removing the resistor equals the zero setting on the Euro EZL.

188 stock HP in Euro 12v 300E

Minman--- I'm trying to figure this out too. In referring to The Illustrated Mercedes Buyer's Guide, 2nd Ed from Frank Barrett, it stated that for instance, the 190E 2.3 -16 Euro version had 185 hp and a compression ratio 10.5:1 vs US version of 167 hp and 9.7:1 compression ratio. Perhaps the Euro version of the 300E has a higher compression ratio than the US version--this could also be a factor regarding the higher hp in the Euro version.

emr,

My Haynes manual which references the European 300's specifies 9.2:1 for the SOHC 3.0L engine, but no hp/torque ratings that I can find. Regarding your earlier question, my engine idles warmer as well, but I'm not excessively high...yet. Give me another month when the Houston heat starts to come on, and I'll have a better comparison with your Florida climate. Meanwhile, I just did a quick trip to Austin, performance without the resistor was good, but not any kind of significant difference, only the kind you might be imagining. FWIW, I averaged 22.5 mpg for 80% highway, 20% city driving, 75-80mph on highway, A/C running most of the time, nasty 25-30mph crosswind on the return trip.

Minman- The compression ratio on the US 300E is also 9.2:1. I was also thinking that since US emissions were more stringent than European, perhaps cats were added to the US versions, inhibiting power. Just a thought---clues being that some people on this site are removing precats and getting more power as a result. There is another overseas company located in England called TDI that does turbo work and they also listed the 300E 12V as 188 HP. I e-mailed them and asked if they knew the differences between Euro and US cars but they wrote that they don't know anything about US 300E's.

2 resistors on 86' 300E?

Hello,

I have located 2 resistors on my car. One behind the brake master cylinder (000 540 24 81 09 8659 24), and another behind the battery (000 540 21 81 09 8659 21).

Has anyone heard of this?

Thanks,
Jerry

on the 95 E320 find my post on page 1 of this thread, which references the pdf for R16. This is the same on your car as mine.

On the left front inner fender behind the ABS pump. It should be on the inner part of the wheel well. look for a little penny diameter black cap on the unit with a big green 2 on it and one of the part numbers listed...

Not sure ont he C280, But I would suspect it would be similar.

it appears it is not in the same place. weird I pulled up the 95 E320 on my CDrom manual, and it gave me the same one as it did for my car.

I'll snap a pic of mine and post it for you to see.

Mine is directly behind the ABS pump, there is a big square unit with a few wires going into it, a few round plug connectors, and one little round itemw ith a big green 2 on it.

IT sits on the front fender inner well behind the ABS pump. yours has a little black thing there, but thats not how it is on my car.. perhaps they have moved it on some models to the other side?

Alon,

I think you're describing the EZL/ignition controller. It also has a vacuum hose leading to it, right?
