500E Oil Cooler -- Why?

Have read a lot here lately about people adding oil coolers to their 500Es? Why would you want to? These things are for mountain driving in Europe with low speed and airflow and high load... not Autobahn driving or anything like that. Not to mention they add weight. And with synthetic oil, they are unnecessary. Why make your 500E slower while getting nothing out of it? I think this RENNtech thing is a ripoff.

The oil cooler would cool the oil regardless of the reason the oil heats up. True, engine temps rise during high load scenarios especially when coupled with low speed, low airflow...but high ambient temperatures also cause engine temps to rise...which the oil cooler should help cool as well.

I think a vehicle being driven as you described would better benefit from a transmission cooler.

But then again, I may be wrong.

I, for one, am installing these to help keep the car running cooler as ambient temps in these parts aren't ideal for the 500E. An ounce of prevention...

I would have to agree with dsinger...it does sound like over kill or uneccesary...kinda like having an upper strut bar put in. I think if you do some serious track running or sit in traffic for hours on end through the life of the car then maybe...I certainly would try very hard not to subject my 500E (if I had one) to the kind of abuse that would require an oil cooler in the first place.
It would be interesting to hear some other comments on this. I think if you had the full Renntech engine treatment maybe an oil cooler would be necessary but not if you're running stock.

Listen its all opinion. I have a 1993 500E these babys run pretty darn warm. Plus these engine are very expensive. If you can prolong the life of your engine what not spend the extra $$. You know that commercial "why spend a little know that spend alot later"

You aren't prolonging your engine life. M119s innately run hotter than a M103 or M104. It's just spending money and adding weight. Synthetic oil does the same thing as an oil cooler with exception to extreme conditions and costs a ton less.

So its about weight, ask how many 500E owners are worried about weight. Im pushing about 350 hp I have no trouble added another hmm let me see about maybe less than 10 lbs.
I make it up with brembo calipers so theres the compensation for the weight. Just my insights friend

Are you saying that the oil cooler will NOT help the engine run cooler (i.e. will not cool the oil)?

Oh, btw, if you get it from a dealer, it shouldn't run you significantly above $300. RENNTech sells you the same thing, but with a $1250 price tag.

It might under extreme conditions, normally, if you are already running synthetic oil (like Mobil 1 15W-50 or 0W-40), no.

I wonder why the MB factory CD-ROM show the 500E (W124.036) with an engine oil-cooler?

Also, the factory MB manual for the R129 500SL shows the M119 engine oil-cooler as a STOCK item?

Why did MBUSA have the engine oil-cooler on the R129 and not the 500E?

Hi Guido,

What time does the show start tomorrow. I think I'm going to
check it out. Also, what temp does your car run at on the highway.
Sometimes mine gets pretty hot(100 C+) for a while. and then
it will drop down to 85 C. I have havent check on the freeway since you guiys did a coolant systems flush. Maybe that will help things. Also, what brake pads do you use? I only got about 6500 miles on my last ones. Your techs recommended i change them so i did.

Hi doug. Show starts at 9 am. As for the coolant system. Those car run pretty hot. Get a hold of Jim F. He makes coolant mod harness that lower the engine temp. just go in the search engine on top. Type in cool harness. For brake pad. I run the IBC green pads. They have a geat bite and stop on a dime. There not german pads there from england. With a kevlar base
material no squeaks at all, and no sdust. Next time you change out your brake instal a set of those. Well its 5 am getting ready to depart for th show see ya.
