Oh, I think you mean E55, there was an E550 introduced in 2007 (I think) that is something different.

I have had two 2006 models and not much in the way of problems. The first - a sedan - had a suspension air strut fail overnight. I didn't immediately notice, but the car rode hard, real hard. I detoured over and dropped it at the dealer on the way to work. My other AMG is a wagon, which I've had for about 2 years now. No repairs yet.

It's easy to get a little more power out of these, but a lot more is expensive. The stock fuel system is near it's limits, many people have had cylinder 8 go lean and blow the engine. The stock intercooling system has limited capacity; if you live in a warm climate the intake temps will spike and the ECU will pull timing to protect the engine, negating any extra boost and fuel. My cars are stock and I've had the supercharger shut down in Texas summer heat.

There are dedicated discussion forums at mbworld and planetsupercar for the w211 AMG. You'll find lots of info there on both common problems and performance modifications (lots of baloney too, compared to this site).

Enjoy.

Yeah, the supercharger has an electromagnetic clutch, much like an a/c compressor. It freewheels when you don't have your foot in the throttle. If the ECU doesn't like the intake air temps, it shuts down the supercharger.

For big power you need new injectors and a new fuel rail. There's a vendor that sells a setup made for the 55K motor.

is the intercooler small?Possible change over for higher ambient temps.discussed it with a turbo man, build a true cold air kit with a dry ice, icebox for hot days, for racing

I would assume maf sensor is first after filter, thats were Iat hide,at least on my car.Or better yet CO2 spray bar on your intercooler. I decided not to purchase car based on some faults. Will look and wait on a v8 normal asperated 6.3 amg

The E55 is a better car than the E63.

The E63 had issues with getting hydrolocked from stuck injectors, bad headgaskets/head bolts, and cam adjusters that go bad and make tons of noise. Not to mention the plastic valve covers! They aren't a bad car, but if you're after modding, you should really look at the E55.

The E55 is pretty much bulletproof. Yes, they do have issues with heat soak (easily fixed with a new heat exchanger/intercooler pump/split cooling system or in the more extreme case, a trunk ice tank) and SBC (not really an issue - MB extended the warranty on the SBC unit).

With the E55, drag radials and a nice DA will get you into 11s in the quarter. With ~1k, will build you a solid high 11 second monster on street tires, or mid 11s on drag radials (with a nice DA). ~4-5k, well, that should be right around a 10 second quarter mile, assuming you can get the bastard to hook...

FWIW - My old 2003 E55, in stock trim, ran a solid 12.4@115ish at Sacramento Raceway. I was 100% stock, running on my 19" wheels, slammed, with ok grip.

Was out there on a test and tune Saturday, with an ambient temp of ~100, and managed to crack off a 12.8 with my AC on max cool and ventilated seats going full blast! Definitely not too shabby for a sedan that was tipping the scales at about 4200 that day!

I agree with the kid, an E55 is a better car than E63. The M156 motor seems fragile. Plus I prefer the massive midrange torque of the blown M113 over the high revving naturally aspirated engine of the 6.3.

One thing to be aware of on the 6.3 is front brake rotors cost ~$1K each. The 55 uses a conventional cast rotor, albeit a large one, that is in the vicinity of $100 last time I checked.

A friend is trying to get $13k for his, and it is making ~560RWHP....
