717.000 transmission part 2.

So 1st gear has given out in the .000 tranny and it's time to get serious about adapting a T5 to my M110. We started gathering info and decided to use the Mustang main case for it's tight B/H bolt pattern and a Camaro tailshaft to get the 23" I need from the backend of the bell to the centerline of the shifter to keep it in it's stock location. With a 199mm Mustang input shaft and a 35mm thick adapter I'm within a 1/4". Camaro T5's are angled 17deg toward the driver so an adapter is necessary to mate the rear tranny mount if you want the shifter to be level. That's also another reason the Mustang main case is necessary, to keep the oil fill hole level. 93 and up Camaro T5's use the Ford B/H bolt pattern but you still run into the angle problem. To get to the point, I really don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already made this swap so any info appreciated.

Forgot to post the pic's. Also the B/H is a Benz for the slope nosed 4spd but the lower 6 holes are the same as the 5spd. This is just for mockup.

The later F-body T-5 (-247) has both oil level plug bosses cast in the case; drill & tap the one that applies.

Why all this worrying about the shifter angle if you could get a 100% adjustable and movable mgw shifter?

Nice work though. Keep it up. I have a t5 mocked up in my w124 and the shifter was only like 3-4 inches forward of the factory automatic shifter.

As far as we can tell by eyeballing, an angled shifter would hit the center console.

Would be nice to only need the Camaro tranny but the longest input shaft for a GM I have found is 182mm. Tried to find a Holden Commodore shaft (240mm) in Australia but with no luck.

Turns out with a little grinding I can use the stock slave cylinder with the Mustang box. I removed more than was necessary, a mistake I'll correct with the real tranny. A pleasant surprise.

A Nissan ( 90's 300ZX ? ) uses a T5 and a semi remote shifter.

What year / engine Mustang T5 are you using for a input shaft?

The Benz 5-spd I have is a sidewinder with a remote, tunnel mounted shifter.
I much prefer a toploader for it's simplicity. Will be using a 94-01 Mustang V6 or 94-95 V8 (part# 1352-085-052) input shaft. Would love to find a 94-95 Cobra T5 but that's not realistic. Going through my spare parts pile I found another slave cylinder with an offset input which means even less interference with the case.

The Nissan semi remote is a single push/pull , twist shaft that comes off the rear of the trans. This allows you to cut length to fit. Ford Aerostar manual trans vans might have used a similar set up. From what I recall, none are body mounted. Even if they were, making some mounts to hang the shifter from the tail shaft would be trivial.

Thanks for the info. We originally toyed with using a Richmond 5-spd which is a sidewinder figuring we could cut the shifter rods to length but it uses a separate rod for reverse instead of 5/R combo like mine, plus you never see used ones for sale. That's what it all comes done to, price. I'm sure you know, T5's are dirt cheap. I paid $45 for both those empty cases I'm using for a setup. The perfect setup would be an Australian Holden Commodore T5 which used the Ford Main case bolt pattern, Camaro tailshaft and the 10 1/4" input shaft which put the shifter location 24" back. Cheap in Oz but the shipping would be more than my car is worth. Plus were having fun making this work. Thanks again.
