190E 5-speed getrag tranny question

Someone is offering to sell me a 5-speed transmission that came off of a 2.3 8V car. I am assuming that this would be the same tranny that is on the 16V. Did mercedes only make one 5-speed manual transmission for the 2.3 8V and the 2.3 16V?

No, the tranny's are not the same. The 16 valve is a close ratio 5 speed with a racing H pattern. Get yours rebuilt or find a used 16 valve tranny.

Yea but...

Would it fit, that is the block, bell housing, and driveshaft the same?

Are you apsolutly sure because i know that the getrag 5-speed off of a getrag does fit the 2.3 8V engine.

I have several of BOTH transmissions. Either will BOLT-UP to either engine, as they use the same basic block. The Getrag is shorter & therefore needs a longer driveshaft.
The Getrag is rated for 50% more torque than the 8V trans.

Do you know what specifically is different about the two transmissions? Do you know what parts were upgraded to take more torque?

ratios for a 8v manual:

1rst= 3.91
2cnd=2.17
3rd=1.37
4rth=1.00
5th=.78

As you can see, a stock 8v has an overdrive 5th and 4rth is a 1.oo ratio.

The 16v ratios below are closer and 5th is 1.00 which is much better for not losing revs.

16v
1rst=4.075
2cnd=2.518
3rd=1.766
4rth=1.263
5th=1.00

The stock 8v trans totally sucks for track use!Too big a spread (especially) between 2cnd & third!
I put a 16v trans in every 190 racecar I build, but they are not easy to find and not cheap.

I have been looking into eventually having some "adapter" plate made so that I can maybe use a hi-perf 6 speed or even a custom dogring race tranny installed behind my 16v motor,,,,,,,,,,,,, when I eventually build my "killer" motor,,,, that is.

I'm sure it can be done, as I just recently bought a complete adapter kit to mount a porsche 915 trans axle to a rover v8, for my McLaren project I'm doing.
The kit came with a block to trans plate, a flywheel, hardware & instructions.

The place is "Kennedy Engineering" in California..... I bet If I sent them a bare block & the trans I want to fit it to, they could make the kit,,,,,,,,but like all "one off" custome work,,,,,,, it won't be cheap

I purchase a Driveshaft half, Radiator w/o cooling for auto trans, Cylinder, Clutch and Brake Pedal, Pressure Plate, Flywheel, Tranny, and floor mounted shifter. Was going to use it in my conversion, but am debating wether or not to do so.

Let me know if your interested and make me an offer.

If you are looking for a 2.3-16 5-speed, check my favorite web site for parts car-part.com The site has the on line inventory with prices of about 300 wrecking yards. There are two offered at $750 and three others without prices.
