i doubt they could make one that was reliable enough and prob couldn't get any more HP maybe 1 or 2 nothing you could really really feel. Only reason why i would buy it would be sound. the throatty sounnnnnnnnnd

I don't see a need. The car was designed to perform a certain way with the stock setup, but making slight improvements to the stock items is always fun, as long as it is not too pricey.

Some mods are fun even if they yield no benefit, as long as you enjoyed doing it. hehe or if it just looks cool.

I personally wouldn't do a cold air intake unless other engine mods warranted doing it.

but then again... don't our 300s come with cold air intake anyway? I mean... the scoop doesn't draw air from inside the engine or anything..... but I gotta say, a nice cone with some chrome connecting pipes just makes the engine look that much better...

Lightbulb Cold Air Intake

Well, for starters, this idea of allowing cold(er) air into the intake is by all means a great idea, no matter what it looks like (as being the last on importance).

I have read many posts, but can see an easy fix, as I plan to do to my factory air box.

1. Remove and clean airbox.

2. Design at least two intake tubes (flexible hose add-on kits) to travel from the grill area to the sides of the airbox, attaching to each side...left - right in the front...

3. Drill holes to get a access for tin snips to cut holes out for air intake tubing. Spray heavy coating of "Rubberized Undercoating" on airbox, except for the top removable lid.....this will help keep inside of airbox temp lower than not having it insulated
Re-install airbox, and continue using factory design air filter.

4. Make sure you have a tight fit, possibly using a latex rubber caulk to seal on the outside tube fittings, and spray paint to match flat black factory air box, or desired color of choice.

Now with this idea, you have improved air cooling to engine, and a somewhat factory modified look. You could even use chrome/silver looking flex tubes for added visuals .

Bottom line is with this plan, you maintain factory look/useage of airbox, and for the money this is your smartest fix with added cooling capacity to engine intake temp. Just makes sense .....but if anyone has any other idea, or improvement to my idea, let us hear it first right here.....

There's no shortage of W124 or W201 intake boot/filter kits to replace the stock air cleaner, but the real issue is designing and pricing a system that truly draws cold, dry, clean air for the intake.

So how cold is cold enough for you MTI? And can you measure the difference from a stock air box to the temp you seek?

How about placing a small air conditioner in the trunk and running the cold air tubes to the engine, on the side of the car....to see if it runs any better. Or a block of dry ice under the hood in a canister....

It sounds like Chris17H seeks info to start a new business, and that's fine with me......but I'm not sure if this poll will do any good with Mercedes owners.

So tell me, what would you be satisfied with MTI...or Chris17H? Can you measure the temp difference? Why not cut a hole in the hood and make a small hood scoop just for cold air intake? There are many ways to do it, but what would be satisfactory....and who would decide?

They have a cold air intake for sale on ebay. I didn't get it because I don't think it will improve performance.

Well, living in the 50th State, I would take any incoming filtered air that was cooler than the ambient air under the hood in sufficent volume to feed the fuel distributor. Yes, you can measure the difference in temps, just head out to your local Bed, Bath & Beyond and get a couple of probe thermometers, or just one if you don't want simultaneous readings.

I have to admit that I have a K&N cone and tube intake kit on my W201 2.3L. I also know that it's probably drawing warm air from under the hood, despite trying to locate t as close to the headlight/radiator duct. There was no change in MPG after installation, so at least it hasn't cost too much performance. I haven't given up hope of being able to thermo shield the K&N and getting a duct down to the bumper slot level. For the time being, I just enjoy the sound the engine makes.

As for other lower fuel mixture temp "techniques" I will always remember how Penske used to chill the Sunoco fuel drums and even the car's fuel tank in a freezer locker before fueling Mark Donohue's TransAm Camaro.

Well let me share a little story of my brothers need for cold air on his brand new Jetta. In his desire to get cold air he bought an AEM cold air intake that mounted under the bumper. Boy did this thing make a difference! This thing really did a good job! It sounded so mean, well, that was until His first rain storm, driving home from work he seized his engine when it hydra- locked. now the cold air intake is sitting on the floor next to his bent forged piston and the pieces that were once his piston dome. That extra 5 hp was reallly worth it! He hates that I remind him, but since I have to R&R his engine, I owe it to myself.

Stick with a K&N drop in filter unless you plan on making other engine mods.

Anyone running a bumper or lip spoiler mounted intake without a water trap runs the risk of hydro-locking.

Like MTI, I also have a 190e 2.3 with a cold air intake and K&N type filter I got off of eBay. I also installed a Jacobs Omni Magnum. Both of those have really helped performance, and I would recommend them. They won't turn my 4 banger into an 8, but every little bit helps.
