Axle style:

The W108 chassis is equipped with a low-pivot swing axle, as opposed to the type used in R-C107,W114/115/116/123/126, etc., which has double CV jointed half shafts.

Axle size (ring gear diameter):

Inasmuch as the W108 swing axle originated in the 1950s, the matter of ring gear diameters, although apparently of two different sizes, is a cloudy subject. They may be 185 & 210mm, and they might be the same dimensionally as the later types, but this writer does not know for sure.

107> 185mm is used in 6-cylinder cars. 210mm is used in V-8 cars

114/115/123> 185mm

116/126> 185mm in 5&6 cyl., 210mm in V-8
Yes, thanks Frank, I know that much, I've got stacks of the "diagonal swingaxle"as they're refered to. I do believe some w123 had 210 diffs though. Could just be ambulance body's. I just don't know what's going on inside the low pivot swingaxle, it's a whole day just to get at the gears. This is the first w108 v8 axle I've had that wasn't already sold before I got it. But damn, if the 185 gears from the later cars fit in the low pivot that would be something. So the question is, who's had a couple swingaxle apart?

I think the thirst washers are the same in the w108 as the 560sl. I bet that pre-1986 diffs also have the same thrust washers, but were probably always an option, never standard before the 560sl. Just my guess.

From what I can see in my version of the EPC, when you do a search for a part across all models, it will return the cars that had the part standard. When I search for the parts in a w108 4.5 LSD, I get a list of cars tat I believe had LSD (or maybe ASR or something like that) standard.

Text messages I sent rwd4evr:

I will text the part numbers for a few:
6 - top left - 1123530662

5- middle - 1093530162 replaced by 1093532062 replaced by 1293531162

10 - bottom right - (not giving numbers replaced, just the ones you need): 1293531062 2.8mm , 1293530962 2.9mm, 1293530862 3.0mm...

0762 = 3.1mm
0662 = 3.2mm
0562 = 3.3mm
0462 = 3.4mm
0362 = 3.5mm
0262 = 3.6mm
0162 = 4.0mm

4.0 part number applicable to:
129, 124, 140, 116, 109, 126, 107.048, no 107.046 or 107.026. So it's interesting that the gen1 diffs must not use that part, but gen2 do (along with the 116, 108/9).

I googled up the thrust washer parts, and it looks like it will cost about $100 for a set of all 3

1123530662 $4 (left)

1293531162 $40 (middle)

1293530962 $60 (one of the right)

Oh. 10 $4 ones.

8 $40 ones

Has anyone been able to find 1293531162 friction disc? I can find them anywhere. Very frustrating as these were used on at least 12 different models from 107 108 109 111 114 115 116 123 124 126 129 140 201

I cant find them. But I have successfully made up a set of shims to stack behind the last steel plate to take up space from worn frictions. I will be installing that diff into a 107 at the end of this month.

See post 33 in this thread.

Any interest in 210mm 107/126 LSD Clutches

two things: first if you have a part number you should be able to get the part. The dealer is a possibility, and aftermarket sources as well.

second if you are thinking of welding the diff, start with an open diff, no need to start with a limited slip.

Not sure on the parts but, yes I would absolutely start with an open diff. Problem Is they are quite valuable as well. I'm fairly certain I can put together a complete live axle swap with mostly of the shelf(junkyard/Craigslist) parts for less that I can sell 4.5 axles for all day long. Driveshaft and a heim joint or two would be the only custom stuff. PT cruiser watts link or a cheap panhard bar setup with a 300$ Ford axle and stock control arms. In the end it will handle better at the limit.
The one interesting thing I found is that the outside of the high numerical swingaxle is yge same dimension as the 4.5 axle. So they may all be the same gear size. If the 185 independent gear set could be made to fit that would be great. Turn Fairly common 3.92/4.08 into any thing from 2.46 and up with independent differentials.
