Valve timing check M104980

Hello Maybe a stupid question, but how do you check the valve timing/valve lift with hydraulic clapets. As the engine is not producing oil pressure to pressurise the clapets ? Grts Patrick

Suppose that the "clearance" was shim adjusted, rather than hydraulically compensated.
Would a dial indicator be involved, and where would it be placed?
