Engine swap for 190e?

My engine in my 86' 190e 2.3 has seen better years. I would need a complete engine rebuilt, but I am considering an engine swap. Does anyone know what would be a good engine to use? How much power can my 5 speed manual tranny handle? How big of an engine can fit in my car? What other modifications would be needed?

Thanks in advance,
Peter V.

Any engine more powerful than a 2.6 Benz motor will destroy that transmission. The torque rating is very low for that transmission.

Hey M.B. Doc,

I've been running around 230hp through one of those 5sp gearboxes for two years and 40,000km's, hasn't missed a beat and no gearbox bits strewn all over the road. Have you seen any of them die from too much power?

Wiped out 2 of them when racing a 150hp 8V car. Both of them had the TEETH pulled off of 3rd & 4th gears.

Damn mine is doing pretty well then, I guess it's a whole different story on the road than on the track. I'll see how it goes when I start putting some more serious power through it with a cam and intercooler, should be interesting.

yeah, i guess I can't really go wrong with a deisel. My parents old 300D couldn't be killed. Actually, i am thinking of dropping in a 2.3 8v engine from a 1988 190e. If the price is cheaper then rebuilding my current engine, I wouldn't mind getting a flywheel and pilot bearing so it would fit my 5 spd manual transmission.
