Unhappy Wireless radar detector

Hello all- I figured you would be the best to ask, I was wondering if any of you know of a decent wireless radar detector, my search thus far has come up empty handed. Thanks, chase

I happen to have a Bell battery operated radar detector which works ok for the most part. Personally I don't really use it anymore because it doesn't provide a great deal of advanced warning. It does save you on occassion especially if your not paying attention. Unfortunately here in California the officers usually hide on the off-ramp to a highway and are not visible to speeders until they have blasted you with instant on KA band.

If your serious about radar detectors your best bet is a Valentine and you'll just have to put up with the cord.

From the articles I have read, the wireless detectors provide much less protection. I have a corded special escort 7500 which hides right under my speedo, and is wired out to both license plates, its awesome. They also make one for the 8500 which has a laser jammer!! Thats my next one.

I personally stand behind Escort, they have never failed me in 10 years.

so far what ive heard about the wireless is also that the protection suffers, however, i hate the look of the cord...now does anyone know how to hide the cord so that it wont be visible, also, i have an 86 300E, with the cigarette lighter in the ashtray, any way to hide it so that i dont have to leave the ashtray open for access to the lighter? thanks...

the escort doesnt have laser jamming capabilities. it has laser detection. it does have the ability to be linked with the Laser Shifter ZR3 that escort provides. That is the laser jammer your probably thinking of.

Wire it into the overhead consol...

I installed my radar detector into the overhead consol.
Simple connection to the ground wire and the moon roof hot lead.
Now my detector is on/off with the ignition!

chaser234-
Sorry - I do not own a digital camera.
I'm not sure how the layout is in your car, but on my '93 190, I removed the housing for the overhead light and moon roof switch.
There are metal prongs at the corners and one in the center (closest to moon roof).
Carefully insert a thin blade screwdiver and feel for the prongs. Once you find them just push in and carefully pull console down at that point.
Once the console was out, I unplugged the connection to the overhead lights and the moon roof.
I cut off the cigar plug from the wiring for the radar detector and
used a quick connect plug to tap into the ground (brown wire- I could see where it was grounded to roof so that made it easy).
I then went to the moon roof harness and found a wire that was hot with ignition on. I used another quick connect here.
I mounted my detector at the top of the windshield and tucked the extra detector wire up into the console and snapped everything back into place.
I do have about 2 inches of wire that comes from the console to the detector, but it's better than a coiled wire hanging in front of the dash.
I hope this helps.

Thanks USMANDAR-
I wish I could take the credit. The concept came from this great forum. Glad it worked for you. It is definitely a DYI job and took me about a half hour.

I understand.
I meant to alert other 190e owners of the DYI since I'm not knowledgable enough of the many different models and what would be involved to do the same installation.
