Question Differences betw 1991 190e 1.8 & 1991 190e 2.0???

Hi Guys

My kid brother is looking at a couple of 2 litre 190es manufactured around the same time as my 1.8.

However, we noticed that they have carbs and are not Fuel Injected...

I have seen some tech data on these 2 cars and know that the FI 1.8 produces a few hp more than the carb 2.0.

Is the fuel consumption significantly higher on a carb model than a FI one for the same engine capacity?

Having owned a 1979 Alfasud Sprint, I know that it is easier to get a car with carb and points going than a FI car in a "breakdown" situation assuming the problem is in the ignition system.

What are the pluses/minuses betw a 1.8 FI and a 2.0 carb model assuming both have gasoline engines.

I can't wait to welcome my kid bro to the 190 bandwagon...geronimo!!!

Hi,

The 1.8 is a newer unit than the 2.0, introduced around 1991. I think it's a little more fuel efficient and a little less pollutant. FYI the 190E badged cars have fuel injection, and simply 190 means no injection.

For me, in the UK, there's plenty of 190 models around and I'd definitely hold out for a 2.0 injection, especially if you're planning on having it with an automatic, as it's nice and torquey, suiting the car well.

But if must choose between 2.0 carb and 1.8 inj ... I would go 1.8. It's newer, more fuel efficient (the 2.0 inj isn't great, and carb probably even worse), and the FI is simply not something you'll ever have to worry about if you're looking at half-decent condition cars. Neither is breaking down, save for possible fuel-pump relay (and, rarely, fuel pump) problems.

later!

Russ

Dang...

There were two 1990 2 litre carb versions going cheap today...

There was a 1.8 but the guy was asking for the sky.

You mentioned that "the 2.0 inj isn't great, and carb probably worse" ...

You think so?

In any case, the 2.0 inj versions are significantly more expensive here than the 1.8s.

Hell, it's gonna be quite a hunt for a 1.8...
