BRembo Rotors?

I just got a contact for BRembo Cross drilled Rotors for a W124 and W201. Price seems good, about double what oem rotors would cost.

I'll be buying some for my 300CE in the next few weeks.

I don't care if they improve braking performance, but I do care if they decrease it.

I plan on braking them in with my current pads for 1000 miles, then switching the pads for some porterfields, or something else.

Alon

A company named "Best Buy" has offered cross drilled rotors for years. They sell Brembo & other brands OR they will cross drill ones that you send them. I used them for 3 three years doing autocross.

Alon, you funny! BTW, I had Best Buy cross-drill my Audi rotors six years ago and they did a great job...cheap too. With Repco Metal Master pads, stopping was significantly shorter.

Can you get a price quote from your source for drilled SL600 front rotors??

In pursuing a quote, make sure they understand that SL600 fronts are directionally vented. FWIW, my source for slotting/drilling rotors would not do my SL600 front rotors, as there's a reinforced section within each cooling vane that appears to be some sort of reinforecement, and is located precisely where you'd drill them.

Dean, if you want yours slotted, let me know 'cuz my source has already built a slotting program on his CNC machine specifically to do these rotors. I believe my cost was at/near $100 each (U.S.), including slotting.

Michael,

Regarding the SL600 Rotors, what kind of modications are required to install these? Is it a DIY job or should I leave it to the techs? (I'm an average DIY but if guides correctly and major tools aren't required I can usually handle it) Thanks in advance

It's an easy swap - requires new rotors, calipers, and backing plates (dust shields).

I would only recommend this "upgrade" if you track your car - on the street, the OE 300mm non-directional setup is plenty of brakes for your car. However, on the track more rotor means more ability to absorb heat

Michael,

Thanks for the input.

Based on all the changes that need to be made your probably right about keeping the originals.

I asked because I noticed on occassion (when my right foot got a little heavy) driving the backroads the brakes started to fade. It wasn't excessive but definitely noticeable. Some bad past experiences tell me this needs to be addressed.

I'm using stock pads so I'm sure changing to something rated for higher temperatures will help. I just don't want pads that are too agressive and will eat my rotors. Maybe I'm just asking for too much Any suggestions on a good set of pads as a cheap alternative to the full upgrade?

I'd first ensure your brake fluid is recent; that said, I've had good luck with Textar Yellow Box pads (or try OE '94 SL600 pads-same shape), but am about to try out a pair of Axxis Ultimate pads - my hope is that they're up to light track use, but still street-able

A caution to anyone who lives in the 'roadsalt belt'.

I have had poor results with Brembo drilled rotors.
The holes trap abrasive road debris, which scores gouges in the pads and rotor face at that diameter.
Since the outer 1/4 inch diameter has no holes, that diameter wears more slowly. After 1 winter, your remaining swept area will be reduced to just that outer 1/4 inch. It's ugly.

With a solid rotor, road debris is more easily swept away, and even when gouging occurs, the wear is more even.
