Does anybody have any more info on these two future models?

There have been rumors of both of these models for more than two years now and I was wondering if anybody knows anything more than the following:

C32 AMG: due out as a '02 model for the W203. Supercharged 3.2L V6 with 320hp and 310lb-ft.

SLK32 AMG: possibley due out as an '02 model in spring of 2001. Same engine as C32 AMG.

AutoWeek reports the possiblility of 354hp, instead of 320hp for the engine.

It will be interesting to see how MB is going to place the C32 AMG/SLK32 AMG in the market as the new M3 is more powerful(and better handling maybe)than C32(if AMG keeps the promised HP), and M3 will have the stick shift instead of Auto tranny(unless AMG and/or Mercedes developed a new 6-speed stick tranny).

Only Time will tell now....

Mercedes already has developed a new 6-speed. Its currently available in Europe on small engine E-Class (maybe others) and is going to replace the 5-speed on the SLK. I dont know if it will make it into the SLK32 though, the Mercedes sticks seem to have trouble with the more powerful engines. I heard that it was going to be improved to handle some bigger engines though. Mercedes also has a squential shifting 6-speed called the "Sprint Shift" which is currently only available on the Sprint van. Rumor is that this is going to be renamed to "Comfort Shift" and put into cars, including the CLK in 2001 (no word on if it makes it to the US).

BTW, if the C32 does make it out in 2001 it will be the first time Mercedes has ever put out an AMG car in the first year of a model. They seem to like to start off with small engines in the cars and slowly add in big ones as sales start slowing.

OK, a little more information....

According to the 2001 Release Schedule the C320 will be out in 2001. This is dated July 12th 1999 though, so who knows if it has changed since.

Here is a new photo of the C AMG:
http://www.automotivenews.com/autonews/html/main/art/merc1.gif

TEXT FROM ARTICLE:Hottest in its class

Here is the redesigned 2001 Mercedes-Benz C class as it will appear in North American showrooms this fall. According to AutoWeek, a sister publication to Automotive News, this is the hottest one, the C32 AMG.
Sources say the supercharged 3.2-liter V-6 in the C32 AMG will be packed with at least 320 hp. Besides the supercharger, AMG adds a deep front spoiler with large cooling ducts and integrated fog lamps, chunky side sills and five-spoke alloy wheels with Bridgestone tires. The new C class has an all-new floorplan. The front suspension has been heavily revised with an aluminum-intensive three-link arrangement replacing the old C's double-wishbone setup. The steering is now rack-and-pinion.

There are a ton more pictures of the new C-Class here.

I notice the C320 has AMG wheels and body work. Are they going the route of the CLK and giving the bigger engine model AMG stylings/wheels for free?

I'm also still a little confused on the whole C320/C32. Is the C320 the standard version then the C32 is going to be the AMG with only a supercharger and no other engine work? For some reason I thought it would be a modified engine in addition to a supercharger.

Hey JSR, Even if the C32 only gets a supercharger, it would probably cost $8000 or more to add it to a standard C320. Plus the chip would have to change. Dont forget that the C32 AMG will have additional stuff like, better/different leather, upgraded stiffer suspension, full AMG exhaust. The C32 AMG will probably have the satallite system as standard and I bet it will base price around $53000- $55000. We will have to wait until the 2002 model year.

one small feature i'd like to see make it to the C32AMG is the "no key" system. You just keep a flat credit card like transmitter in your pocket and the doors unlock automatically when you walk upto the car, and the shift lever has a start button on it.

Noah, I am only guessing, but I speculate that the "no key/card in the pocket option" will surface with the next E-Class W211 in 2002/2003. The E-Class is MBZ "bread & butter" volume leader sales car.

Keyless Go system is not new to MB as W220 S-Class already has it. But the small-W220 look is certainly very mature. The interior looks good so far(if not better looking than W220, except the dash cluster). Hope MB will keep the quality up with new C-Class this time...
