1969 280SE sedan

I have posted a similar thread under the Vintage forum. I am restoring an old 280SE sedan with a 4 speed manual Transmission and want to know how to get better performance from the engine and suspension without altering the car too far from the original design. From wires, plugs, coil, exhaust, etc. under the hood to shocks, springs, bushings, tires, etc. Please don't think you will be insulting my intelligence as I can be "performancely" challenged. Any help will be appreciated.
