500E 4 Speed vs. 5 Speed Tranny?

I went to AMMCO transmissions today and the guy said that my transmission is skipping 2nd Gear. He says that i have to rebuilt my transmission because my car uses first then jumps to third. So should i rebuilt it or get a five speed while im at it?

you in so cal? take your car to enrique @ Mr MB Motors in tarzana 818-708-8086

Tell him Alon Sent you. He will tell you if you really need a new tranny for sure. If he rebuilds yours, proce will be very reasonable, and the tranny will feel better than new.

If you have your tranny rebuilt, I'd suggest having them install an SL600 clutch pack-I understand it's even more durable.

As to switching to a 5 speed, be advised that the MBZ 5 speeds are electronically controlled, and are not compatable with a 500E. Sorry.

If you have a lot of money, there is only one answer:

Go to Renntech and ask them for a manual transmission for your 500E...

i dont have that much money but there was this guy in west la that told me for $5,000 he can install a 5 speed. I sort of believed him considering that he had ferraris and porsches at his shop and he right away what my car was when i pulled up. He even had the transmission sitting their ready.

I would talk to my mech enrique. He knows mercedes inside and out, and can tell you what you can and can't do.

With any benz, the best place to take it is to a mercedes specialist. I got a guy in santa monica, who works on everything from rolls to ferrari, range rovers and all, he does good work, but I would never take my benz there, because my mech has been workign on benzes for over 30 years, and is the former shop foreman from bh ltd mercedes and auto stiegler.

If anyone can help you with your tranny, he can tell you what will or will not work, and he can rebuild yours for a very good price.

Definately worth a call or trip down to him.

I agree with Alon, there is nothing better than someone who knows Mercedes in and out...

However, $5000 for a manual gearbox on a 500E, that sounds pretty dam good!! That will porbably make your car even faster!!! (A C36///AMG with a Carllson manual gearbox is 2s faster from 0 to 62mph!!! )

Do you know what kind of manual trans. the guy wants to install?

*Five*-speed manual?

Six, baby.

I've been wondering about the difficulty of that conversion myself.

I meant 2 sec faster for the 0 to 1km stop & go!!! For the 0 to 62mph, the C36 Carllson with manual greabox is 0.5s faster which is already pretty dam good!!!
