RE. POST: READ!!! Free HP for W201 & W124 owners!
I read thru this post..it sounds fantastic but I did not find out how to do this with my 1988 190e 2.3.
Could someone tell me how I can order an adjustable resisiter here or how to order the various resister sizes? I also do not know where my resister would be located. I love this site.

The variable R16 resistor was not installed in US spec vehicles, so you won't find it listed in a US EPC. The two "typical" locations on the W201 has been 1) behind the battery compartment and 2) alongside the valve cover, under the air cleaner box. The part is wrapped in tape.

By removing it, you advance the timing of the ignition. you don't need to replace with any other part, unless you want to vary the amount of advance. The general rule of thumb is that the advanced ignition will net you some power, but at a cost . . . you will probably notice a dip in your MPG, and you may have to use, if you don't already, premium (US 91 octane) gas, if you notice that your engine is "pinging" which is the non-technical way of describing the predetonation of the fuel air mix in the combustion chamber. When/if it happens, you will hear a new "ping" noise from the engine. You can always plug the R/16 back in if you don't like the experience.
BTW, I hope you get your keyboard fixed first. ![]() |
