E500/500E first time buyer questions

Looking for a E500/500E and need some advice. What are the issues that need to be addressed with this model, things to look out for. Any major differences between the 2 models that make one more desirable? Where's the best place to start looking for one? Thanks guys....

my $0.02

1) spend 2+ weeks searching this forum: read as many 500E/E500 threads as possible; your questions are addressed, ad nauseam...

2) what are your goals? what do YOU find "desirable" in a performance model Mercedes-Benz?

Cool

Hi Scott,
I searched the archives but didn't find what I was looking for, ie problems to watch out for when purchasing one, I guess I have to search a little better. As far as plans for my 500, to drive it till the wheels fall off. I loved my E420, which goes back in 2 months, so far my search for a E500 has led me to a used car place in Atlanta which is selling a 94, but it has been re-painted. Makes me nervous... Hopefully someone around here will have one for sale or know of one. That's how I picked up my Porsche, from the Rennlist, a forum just like this one. I bought it from a lister and have had no problems whatsoever.

to consider

Drew,

I have my front and rear valances, grill, and rocker-panels repainted *at least* once every 18 months or so, if road-rash merits touch-ups.

I assume you are (righly so) leery of an accident repair; however, you should clarify what was painted and why.

Lest I forget... I forgot to add, earlier, that I extend to you my warm welcome to mercedesshop.com!

If you are looking at the Silver one in Atlanta advertised on Autotrader, LEAVE IT ALONE. I heard it got into an accident and that is why it was repainted. They have been trying to sell that car for at least a year and a half.

Is that the one by Cummins Motor? He told me the re-paint was due to some "bubbling" of the paint. I just found an old thread in the archives which I'm going through as we speak by Dcraig. I just sent him a e-mail. BTW is paint an issue with these cars, prone to fading?

Yes that is them. Check some old threads, I believe someone mention this is an accident car, or the carfax showed an accident.

Drew,

Buy a 3 month unlimited subscription to carfax, it's worth it. Regarding paint problems the only one I'm aware of is paint crazing which only occured on smoke silver. It looks like the paint has scratches but it's actually in the paint rather than on the surface.

I've never heard of bubbling, sounds odd to me.

You really do need to do an extended search, I know I've answered your exact question at least 10 times and others have even more detailed responses. Keep looking and you will find what you need.

BTW there are a couple of members who are currently selling their vehicles, put up a wanted add in the "Cars For Sale" Forum and I'm sure you'll get some replies. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm on page 15 under "E500" search of the archives. Lot's of useful info and I'm learning a ton. I'll keep reading tonight and keep an eye out on the "for sale" section here. I have an unlimited amount of time and will be looking for a smoke silver with light grey interior, documentation, yada, yada.... Can't wait to be an official member, LOL...

Lots of info on 500E PP (pre purchase) in the archives although that is not quite apparent when you first start searching.

E500's are more rare as 94' was the last year they came into the US.

Maybe you might try extending your search to 92-93' years and maybe do the Hood/Grill/Lights/Trunk Lid conversion to get the right exterior look on the right car?

Also, the 92' M119 engine will take a 1.0 liter bore size increase with the stock block, the 93-94's will not, maybe something for the future to consider?

What is your upper limit on miles?

Ross,
I'd like to find one in the 70,000 mile range, but would go for one in the 100,000 mile range if all the work has been done, ie. timing change, harness....
Gotta be in the right color combo, you know the kind that makes you look back every time you get out of the car.

I have a 92 500 for sale. It has 57 k and is in great shape. No paint work or accidents. All service is up to date. The car has been in Texas its whole life.(Salt free roads). It is smoke silver with beautiful black interior. I just put new EVO II wheels and Firehawks on it and it is ready to go. I am asking 29,900 and would be willing to listen to any offers. You can contact me at 214-334-7418 to discuss. I should have pics later today.
