Like the fog of war

It is in the dealership's best interest to keep us in the dark. The acronym supposedly stands for DISTRIBUTOR IGNITION SYSTEM.
Yet, if you put that in the search hopper, you will get even more gibberish than the EZL.

Call the tech and ask him to connect you to the parts guru and tell him the reason why - U just don't want to part with $2-3K for something that is sitting on a boneyard shelf available for $3-400. Ask the parts guru to go into his EPC computer and give you all the part numbers for that unit that will work on your car - NOT JUST THE PART NUMBER FOR A 1994 E500 Chassis # W124.036 ENGINE# 119.974

No matter what all the boneyards or MB Technicianspeak calls them, the one universal item will be the Part Number of a unit that will properly control your engine's ignition.

EZL's Deconstructed

Okay, the dealers I called couldn't give me all the old part numbers because their computers look forward not backwards; however, EZL's from the following cars should work in any 500E/E500:

1. Any 92-95 500E/E500

2. Any SL500 up to 97

3. Only 92-93 500SEL's, and

4, Only 92-94 S500s.

I hope I've saved some poor soul a lot of trouble, not to mention a few grand. Thanks to everyone who shared their input.

Khari

Well,

I have that part number. My dealer quoted my $3200 for the part. When I asked for a break, he said he could knock 10% off. Ha, ha, ha.

If for some reason it doesn't work, call Rod at Potomac German Auto (http://www.pgauto.com) at (888) 852-8680, or Ryan at Silver Star Recycling.

Tell them Neil sent you.

Good luck,

:-) neil

BTW: replace all the fuses under the metal control-unit box if you haven't done so in 5-years.

Hey Wagon Maven How R U?

What do those fuses do/protect and how accessible R they?

R they part of the EZL and if so, is it possible that just the fuses are malfunctioning?

They are extremely accessible if you have a 5mm (ot 6mm ?) hex-bit/allen driver. It is the metal box where the battery would go if it was upfront.

They protect all the electronic black-boxes (e.g., ASR, LH, Cruise, ABS, etc.).

Simple ATC-type fuses, I believe they are all "red" which is 5 or 10 amps, I forget.

We're doing fine with our move to Florida.

Thanks everyone, I'm back up and running

Well, I finally got my car back today and everything seems fine. I managed to source a used EZL with the correct part number and paid about $850 total for diagnosis, parts and installation. It could have been a lot worse.
