Hi folks, i need help on solving this problem of coldstart. it takes about 4 to 7 starts
before i could get the idling going when it's cold especially this winter. cold start valve has been checked. injectors cleaned. fuel pressure checked etc. once it starts and warms up, car will be fine for the day, but left overnight, same problem comes up. any help/ideas greatly appreciated. Also, is there any exhaust headers available for this car?? Car only has 166,000 kilo's on it and still runs like a charm and interior/body highly detailed like new!! thank you. |

Hello Tito,
I have a 1989 190 E 2.6, the car has 89,000 miles. It only takes one crank to start the engine, but vigorously shakes for 3-7 seconds, then it idles normal. Did your Mercedes do this prior to have the problem with 4-7 starting attempts? Thanks GP Oh, where are you located at, I 've haven't seen a mercedes 190 registering kilometers, instead of miles??? |

Gp.
Thanks for your reply concerning my cold start problem. My car did not give any symptoms like shaking etc. before the cold start problem happened, although now after a slight adjustment in the throttle body, and a bit warmer whether it only takes two starts before it catches on and idles. By the way, i live in Toronto,Canada if you were wondering about the kilometers. Thanks again, Last edited by whunter; 01-24-2006 at 12:31 PM. |

Gentlemen!
We have the same problem with our two Merc 190 E's as I mentioned before one is a tuned AMG 2.3 liter and the other is a bog standard 2.0 liter and Automatic. Both have the same problem at start up it takes a short moment for them to catch and then they shake horribly at 400 - 500 RPM's and after 5-10 seconds they climb to standard idle and are as sweet as a nut. By the way we live in England, but the weather does not influence the starting. Please HELP. gratefully yours Captain Toby |

Assuming that the engine is in good tune & has good compression, I would suggest that the fuel pressures be tested. Also have the fuel injectors tested. Fuel pressure bleed-off can cause the engine to die w/starting! Possibly there is a Build-up of carbon on the intake valves. Have you inspected the dist. cap & rotor?

Thank you M.B.DOC,
since the head was totally cleaned and reground after the headkasket went , i can only think it has got to do with the fuel pressure. I will see to that thanks again for your prompt answer. Captain Toby |

Check the fuel injection nozzles. The old ones are made of steel and liked to rust small pits into the seating surface of the pintle. The new injection nozzles are made of brass and do not rust. Good luck all.

Thanks, but please help further
Ok, i am only 17 years old. I have a 1989 190 E 2.3 L Mercedes.
It takes 7-8 starts in the morning, and 2-3 after 2 hour no use of car. Since someone mentioned the gas pressure, i wanted to mention, that everytime i go to get gas(fuel)... the cap is hard to get off, and when it does it seems to intake a lot of air... there is a great vacum inside the tank is what im trying to say. So please tell me if you think that has anything to do with the starting problem. The temperature here(California) isnt too bad... no snow, but it is cold in the morning. Please tell me exactly what i would need to change, since my funds are EXTREMELY limited. Thanks for everyones support, u guys are great. |

190E start problems
I am having the same problem, I have eliminated the fuel pump and ignition because it will star and run with starting fluid. I checked power to the cold start injector and it lit the test light but that does'nt mean the valve itself is working!!!! I put it in a friends shop today so I will let you know what the fix is!!!!!!! Good luck!! Steve

as a cretified audi tech we have found that carbon on the intake valves will cause hard starting and poor engine runability when cold. the cure is to run a few bottles of tecroline through the fuel system. this will genreally cure the problem after two or three tanks of fuel. what is happening is the carbon is soaking up the fuel when cold causing a lean fuel mixture resulting in engine miss fire. my 190e had this problem when I first got it, since adding tecroline the hard start/shake has all but disappeared. this is just my opinion, so take it as you will, but it can't hurt to try an inexpensive fix.

Carbon
Joe, thank you for the quick response and info!!! My car belonged to my mom and she passed away in 1999. The car was driven here and there by my dad but not as often as it needed!!! There is probably carbon all over the valves. I will run a few bottles through it when I get it out of the shop!!! Appreciate the info!!! Steve
