500E Battery Drain Problem Persisting
This is posted as a new string, since the previous discussion was under the heading:"Shop Manual & Design Schematics."
Neil (Ke6dcj): Thanks again for your advice. The result, using my Radio Shack Multi-Meter is that the drain is a constant 1.5 amps. My car only has the simple 300E style horn honking alarm system, that was disabled once all fuses were removed from the fuse box. (I didn't figure out which one.) Thus, it turned out there was no need to wait for alarm to go through a protocol. After initially removing all fuses from the box, the 1.5A drain persisted. It still persisted after I removed: (1) the two fuses from the box to passenger side rear of regular fuse box, (2) the two barrier strip (30A fuses), one of which is in front and the other to right rear of regular box, and (3) the 15A plastic American style fuse that stands up right and forward of the fuse box. (There is no labeling for any of these fuses, so I could not correlate them with any system, other than the phone which I noticed is covered by one of the fuses in Item (1).) Incidentally, disconnecting the computer style plug from the phone box in the left side of the trunk made no difference. Interestingly, fuse "D" is not identified in the fuse box, so I have no idea what it does, although it made no difference. As I then worked in reverse putting things back to see if the drain increased, which it did not, I managed to blow up the meeter, which fortunately is only a $29 model. Looking through the prior owner's records, I noticed that his "repaired" 1st battery drain problem was traced to a lamp control unit, behind the "cluster," presumably dashboard. This was part No. MBN 004 545 08 32. His second "repaired" drain was then traced to a wire in the phone in the center console. I'm awaiting arrival of my first shop manual for this car, so I'm lacking a wiring diagram. I really don't at this point know where to look for (a) other fuses, and/or (b) un-fused systems. Any further ideas will be deeply appreciated. |

Fuse "D" is for the aux-fan/pre-resistor.
If the current load/drain is still there with all the fuses taken out, then its most likely a circuit that is not protected such as: EGR, airbag; knock control; electronic ignition; base module; burglar alarm; idle-speed control system; generator), OR an aftermarket item/circuit added (e.g., remote door-locks, etc.). Check out this PDF on finding current drains: http://www.silcom.com/~neilv/sportline/images/W124-current-drain-54-1030.pdf :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

when i bought my 500E in Houstin, the PO had this same problem. The dealership in Houston (ParkPlace Southwest) brought in a MB Tech to diagnose. Somewhere along the door panel or other inside panels, there was a short.
You might want to have your dealership contact the Housotn dealership to see if anyone remembers that fix.

Are there one or two Fuse box locations on the 500E?

Mark: Thanks for the tip.
Roas: My 1993 model has 1 large box with 24 fuses (8-12A), a tiny box with 2 fuses (8-16A), a single stand up American Style 15A plastic fuse, and 2 flat barrier strip 30A fuses inside separate boxes, all in left rear of engine compartment. If anyone knows of any other fuses elsewhere, I would be delighted to learn. I still await receipt of my Shop Manual, and am not confident it will be totally accurate for my particular car. |

HEy Chris. Do you have. The Facotry. Cd changer. By the Way .I just recied. You MO today. I will send out the 500E bible tommorow. Also. Even thoughyhou pulled the fuse. The ealier MB's were notorious for the the natenna motors. drawing excessive amperage.. Like Neil said. Any aftermarket. accesories on the car.
That blue stand up fuse. If for the Factory phone System. The module in the left trunk area is called the PSE. The ealier 500SL's which are basically the same engine and electronics. There were defective alternators. Drwaing excessive current. It didnt happen to, many,But I did see a few in my days. But I doubt that is your source.. Yo could also check the sound system Amp located in the right trunk behine the liner. Its a silver box. There are external fuse on the unit itself. Pull those fuses and see if the light goes away. Remeber. The clock will pull so many miliamps. thats normal. good luck.
