107 hard top fit

Is it normal for the hard top to have a gap around the rear and sides? I installed mine today and it seems to be locked down but I don't remember the top not fitting flush with the body. I bought the car in June and immediately took the top off for the summer. The gap is about 3/4 inch at the back and slightly closer on the sides. The ride is quiet so I'm assuming the gap is normal perhaps to prevent damaging the paint during movement? Is this correct??

That's the way the top is designed to fit. The gasket mates to the car and holds the top off the body.

I took off my hard top singlehanded, tricky, but did it! Tried the soft top, oiled the hinges and folded it and then discovered I put a hole in the top as it fetched up folded the wrong way. The center hinge section folds either way and I folded the wrong way! Drove last week for the first time and with top down....too cold, had the heat on full!

Yesterday put the hard top back on and found the passengers side turn-latch would not go down but was positioned correctly to slip in. Found that I had to approach by lifting everything up and then setting the pass side latch in first, then the remaining three.

Yes, it looks as though there is a gap but that rubber seal is flush to the hard top with rear cable latch snugged in. BB

Either you are joking or serious. If you really did take the Hard Top
off single handed, you must lift weights.

I've replaced and removed mine twice by myself. It obviously helps if you have a hoist...which I do.

Damn - you sound serious. How many scratches did you put on it
taking the hard top all by yourself?

I would love to know how you did it yourself...did you climb into the interior and lift it off with your back/head?

OK, you guys are pretty persistent so I'll explain in brief.

I put two very thick blankets over the trunk, got in, lifted the whole thing back towards the trunk then lowered it on to the blanket. The latch-down hook/pin was cushioned well, so that wasn't an issue. Next, while my back supported the front section of the top, I then slid a towel wrapped short 2X4 between the windhield frame and top. Then I got out of the car, closed the door, added additional blankets drapped over the side of the car, then lifted one corner of the front section of the top and pulled it towards me then stopped, then dragged the rear section over the trunk, towards me (mind you, I'm doing all this from the drivers side of the car)

Next, and while everthing is tettering on balance, I grabbed with my right hand under the aft side window, the left hand under the front, and pulled evenly the whole thing out as far as I could without going over the edge and then lowered the whole thing to the ground onto a dolly then rolled it into the garage and propped it against the side of the garage.

No scratches or any damage was done!

Is it heavy you ask, yes! Do I prefer to do it again like this, no!

But guess what, a couple of days later, I put it back on, all by myself!

Don't ask!

just a thought.. you can get a ceiling hoist on ebay for 170 bucks then it can sit up near the ceiling of the garage and won't be in the way or get damaged.

You need some friends. It is a lot easier to call over a buddy and
two can get it off in less than a minute. Then spend the next
30 minutes drinking beer and talking about the wifes with your friend :-)

I would be impressed if someone was able to stand outside the car and
just lift the top up and walk it off. He would have to be one big
sum of a ... :-)

Those 107 SL tops are heavy and quite awkard. Its easy to bugger
up the paint even with two doing it.

I'm not sure how long I'm going to keep the hard top on. Next time it comes off, it may stay off! Good idea about the hoist!

Looked at your red 72 and wow! Very nice.

Thanksgiving day, I spent much of the free time putting my front bumper back together. I took it off the car to re-extend one of the bumper shocks as it had been collapsed from what appeared to be a minor hit to the right side.

With that accomplished, I repainted the flat black on the underside, put new turn signal lenses on, and replaced the fog lamps. If the weather is good tomorrow, I'll be putting the bumper back on the car. BB

thanks for the compliment!

you're right about the top. it's a convertible and i don't see any time soon that i'll put the hard top back on. it's sitting in my ceiling hoist safe from any collateral damage from a freak accident.

i hope over the winter i will have all the goodies on. everything is sitting in my garage waiting for me to find time.
