Its not necessarily aftermarket. There actually ae a lot of 450SL's that were Euros that got the bumpers and loghts changed due to state regulations. The only way to tell is VIN. Euros start with WDB107.

Thats what I was questioning. Is it an euro or a fake euro since they only came on euros. Did the 450SL euro come with them? I know my 500SL euro has it. And if they did come on the 450 euros ,whats years had em.

I know the they were offered on 280 Sl's in Europe until they went out of production (1985?) because their shown in some of the original English sales brochures I have. I figured they were offered on all of the models sold in Europe. I know it was first introduced on th 500SL and that model probably had them exclusivly during the '70s. What model 500 do you have? I have a line on a 77 with a 4 speed the owner might want to sell cheap.

I added the rear spoiler myself. I believe the 500s had them as well as other euro models. I will be adding the euro bumpers and lights next. I also added a Nardi wood steering wheel and the rear leather jump seats recently.

I have a 500sl. Where can you get the euro bumpers? I was thinking about making it all euro. It still has the headlights and spoiler. What other euro things should be on it? And what about the Nardi steering wheel. You got a picture of that? Its not the one in the picture? And whats the advantage over stock. Does it match the rest of interior or does it look aftermarket?

There is a set of Euro headlights on E-bay that are pretty cheap right now. Check under 107 parts. Jimwusa, any problems finding parts or servicing your car? I'm buying an 84 500Sl next weekend. Just wondering what lies in store.

This web site is a great source for all the parts you will need. I have a local certified MB mechanic that is familier with these cars.
One of the things to realize is that most if not all body parts are the same. MAKE SURE you get the right part number off the part and make sure you get the engine numbers correct when you have to get engine parts. Haven't really done much work to mine yet. |

Ok, here's a set from my 1980 450SLC:
http://www.idunno.net/c107 My father-in-law was a devoted Mercedes fan. I wound up having to manage his fleet of 4 Benzes after he passed away unexpectedly last winter. I met my wife while she had her '71 280SE. My wife and I are in the process of selling 3 of them, in varying conditions, but I am going to hang on to the SLC. I wound up "delivering" it to him after he bought it from a friend in NYC in 1999, so not only is it a great car, it has a lot of sentimentality attached to it. It is in "10 footer" condition exteriorwise. I picked up a lot of tips from the site, so the least I can do is share my results.... I re-did the interior: - Palomino MB-Tex front/back seat covers - New front and back seat (back and bottom) pads from GAHH - New armrest (Thanks TomE500!) - Newly painted gauge needles (Testors RC-78) (Thanks Matt (SD,CA) and Dcraig) - New dash bulbs and reconnected the fiber optics to the switches. - New carpet/mat kits - New Wood kit from eris-car.de (I had to cut the wood for the top center switches myself as they didn't have a configuration for the SLC. They provided some extra pieces.) - Recolored the vinyl (really anything palomino) all around with the Palomino-in a can from Color-Plus. Really great stuff and easy to work with. Used their super-cleaner to get the smoke smell out of the car. Vacuumed the inch-thick pile of ashes that accumulated in the center. - My father-in-law put in an older 160mph speedo (without the km listings) but I put the original 85MPH speedo back in. Spent an hour playing with the new puzzle of renumbering the odometer to match the current mileage then repaired the trip odometer with Super Glue Gel and a toothpick. When the budget allows, I'll pay to get it recalibrated to 160MPH. I found out the hard way that it isn't just a simple swap. (Speed always registered too low and a mile on the odometer was actually about .8 mile on the highway.) - Relubed the sunroof track and cable. Now it goes 75% on its own (without a push) instead of 50%. Drat. Next time will take the sunroof off completely and lube the tracks all the way. "Beyond-me" or mechanic-discovered items: - New muffler/tailpipe - New windshield (Can now drive into the sun again) - New shifter bushings - New Bilstein Comforts all around - New Rear Springs and Rear Subframe bushings (Thanks RickM for the compare and contrast pictures, she was definitely riding low in the back) - New Belts - New A/C Idler Pulley, A/C Recharge Thanks again to all for the tips. Here it is, 560 84K, probably not much different than yours...but I sure did a lot, on a "drive anywhere" creampuff...
Tune-up (rotor, cap, wires, plugs, air filter/smog pump filter, fuel filter,P/S Filter) All 4 Brakes Redone/Replaced (ALL pads, rotors, sensors, calipers) Fluids (brake, radiator (flushed),P/S,oil-synthetic blend) New OEM floor mats Much Rubber (trunk seal, top cover seal, F/R soft top, F/R hard top, soft and hard top/window seals, top cowl pads, antenna gasket) Hood Pad + Rear Hood Pad Polished air filter New speakers (front-Rockford/Fosgate, rear-Blaupunkt) Blaupunkt Monte Carlo Stereo (MP3 player) Center Console Wood sent out/redone Hard Top Headliner/plastic Redyed Instrument Pod Cleaned/relamped/Needles Painted Temp. sensor replaced 4 Bilstein "comfort" shocks, steering shock (Boge) 5 wheels refinished/replaced (curb rash issue), Laurel center caps, chrome bolt caps Paint touched up (properly, airbrushed/basecoat/clearcoat) Top cleaned/treated (Porche chemicals) First Aid Kit/Bracket (new OEM, were missing) Infamous HVAC center vacuum actuator rebuilt, 2 others rebuilt I did all of the work myself because the only mechanic I'd trust within 50 miles of here won't work on "foreign" cars. This is the first foreign car I've worked on and, with a manual available, I didn't find it significantly more difficult (so far...knock on wood) than an Oldsmobile. In some ways, it's quality design can make things actually easier. I hope to get new Kumhos and a windscreen this summer, and plan to do the First Gear module this winter and also redo the seats. This is going to be a "summer only" car, and I've "budgeted" myself 6000 miles per year. I'm willing to spend or budget some real money on this car, because I intend to keep it at least 20 years or until I drop dead, whichever comes first! |
