SL jumpseat poll, who has one and is it REALLY usable???

OK a freindly poll here about the SL jumpseat. Ive noticed a lot of posts about them, Buying them and installing them. But is it really usefull. I'm 6"2" and I have my seat all the way back (1988 560SL). I just dont' see that the jumpseat as usable. Or are the majority of the SL owners using them.

My deal is a little different. I have a jumpseat and it gets used with my 17 year old daughter hauling around her 13 yr old sister with friends and is very handy. If you sit lengthwise it is OK, assuming the driver has short legs! My 6'1"" 260 lb frame does not allow for anyone to sit behind me!!!!

I agree, we had to take my sister in-law somewhere, and she wanted to ride in the SL. The wife rode in the back cross wise. Other then that it's really not usable. Maybe, maybe a baby seat.

I have thought about trying to locate the parts to put it back as it was. The original owner didn't save them.

Seems the local police does not mind too much when the rear passengers sit on a real seat instead of a piece of plywood, considdering the car is a two-seater! .These seats are not meant for the trans continental trip but work fine for the kids and their friends.

I use the jumpseat in my R129 quite often. It is fitted with two lap belts. I think it is homologated as a four seater. Certainly it was marketed here as a 2+2. The rear seat was a standard fit item in the UK. I have had two adult women in the back, but it was a tight squeeze and just a 20 mile journey. My 14 year old sister rides in the back quite a lot (she is adult sized); she sits lengthways with her feet on one side of the seat. I can't see any problem putting tots and small children in there. My brother has squeezed in there a few times, too, he is 6ft plus.

(It is best to put the roll bar in the up position when riding with people in the back seat, lest it pop up and take your passengers' heads off.)

I have one in the back of my '85. I have to say it certainly comes in very handy. However, I'm 5'7" and my seat is back pretty far...no one behind me. My wife will set here seat to about the half way point so my 8 year old daughter can fit in. Once in she's quite comfortable.

I bought a jump seat and placed it in the car (without "installing" it) -- I had planned to paint/dye it to the color of the seats (jump seat is black, car interior is brown) and then bolt it in (with seat belts)-- but I sold the car . It really looked a lot better than the carpeted board that was back there, but I never thought to put a passenger there -- just a more plush place to put cargo or just a nicer, more finished look for the car.

I kept some of the extras that I bought (jump seat, wind screen, mats, top cart and cover, etc.). I am thinking that I will offer them here prior to trying my luck on ebay.

Hello Dan,
if you still have the black jump seat, please let me know. I just bought one that is burgundy in color and will have to dye it black unless I can find a black one. Btw does anyone know what paint to use and if it is durable?

One of the first thing after purchase was to install a jump seat. I thought the rear carpeted cardboard looked very cheesy. I ordered the matching leather palomino color and it fit perfectly. I also installed the 2 seatbelts. It fits my two kids perfectly on sunday drives. It gives the car a more finished look.

I do still have it. You should send me a private message if you are interested in buying the seat. I apologize to anyone who is offended by transactions within the forum, it wasn't my intention to hijack the thread.

My jump seat was in action this weekend! My wife and I had six guests staying, none of whom brought a car, so we had to press the SL into action as family transport. We had an adult and a child on the back seat with no problems at all, although the front seat passenger had to move his seat quite a way forward. I was quite impressed with the car in the circumstances.

Jumpseat Comment

I used to have a 107 with a jumpseat. I used this for my young kids and it was convenient.
I now have 129 and I purchased a jumpseat for it. With the top on, headroom is limited. Though I wouldn't be without one, as it's great for that "surprise" passenger that can, at least, have a decent upholstered seat to be in. Leg room and headroom are questionable, but not bad for a 4 seat sports car. I have a Porsche 911 that has factory rear seats w/belts that are smaller than the rear seat in my SL, and I was able to take 4 adults along, in that car. Albeit that they were NOT 6 footers nor 200+ pound individuals. You do have restrictions . . . but in a pinch it's better than the luggage rack or a long walk in the night.

My 11 yr old rides fairly comfortably in back, behind the passenger. It helps that my wife (passenger) is 5-1 so the seat can be moved forward to accomodate his legs. The wind usually beats him up pretty good, but with either top up, he really likes it! I'm afraid he will not be able to ride back there for too many more years... My eldest 6-1 and my youngest is headed for similar heights.

Jumpseat

There is an issue about the roll bar deploying and taking somebody's head off
while sitting in the back, would it make more uncomfortable to ride with the roll bar already up? I've been thinking about getting one of the seats but I've heard about the roll bar and got me thinking.Does anybody heard any horror stories about them.

I just found out about them today when looking on ebay. My car, the guy put speakers on the bottom of what would be the seat. I'd love to find the option if possible.
