I would assume that they would have some sort of head gasket problem if the head gasket is original.

Both M103 and M104 engines have head gasket trouble (with the orignal gaskets).

I don't know if '90-'92 300 SL's have engine wiring harness problems.

Do they have M103 or M104 engines?

If they have M104 engines, I would guess that it is the same or similar to the early 3.0 liter engine ins '90-'92 300 CE's, and these cars don't have engine wiring harness problems.

I had to replace the head gasket in my 91 300SL at 95K miles. I believe that the wiring harness problems began in the 1993 models when Mercedes switched to a new biodegradable wire insulation which had been mandated in Europe to reduce pollution (poly-vinyl chlorides). The new insulation can't take sustained heat and it gets brittle, then cracks. Another example of "No good deed goes un-punished"; as lots of electrical wiring ended up in the dumps.

Wiring harness problems started on the E-class 104 in 93 but on the SL 104 in 94. The 93 300SL was still CIS.

Tecqboy: Wow! I sure am glad to hear that the biodegradable wiring harnesses started in 1993 and '94. I have a 1991 300SL and a 1992 600SEL. I've been very worried about having wiring harness trouble in my 600..but not my 300SL

What about a 96 SL320, does that engine have the problem with the head gasket?
