When to change steering damper?

My 1991 Sl300 is approaching 100K miles. I have noticed that on certain and various road surfaces, there is a vibration noticable in the steering wheel. On very smooth roads, no vibrations. Tires are new and balanced and front end is in good alignment. So, I am asking what experience others have had regarding the steering damper. Can it be checked like a shock absorber? That is, if I unbolt it, how should it "feel"? It's a cheap enough part and maybe I should just replace it on principle. But I thought I'd ask opinions or experience on when others have changed the steering dampers on their vehicles. Thanks. Tod

My 86 560sl at 81K was dead last year. There was zero resistance as it was compressed. It's cheap, and pretty easy to replace.

When you see oil seeping out then you know it's time to change. I have to do mine yet as the damper starts to weep. I have not noticed any vibration so far, but am sure it is just a matter of time.

I think it is a fairly easy DIY job. There are two bolts holding the damper in place, from where I can see. Hope no surprises when I am ready to do mine.

I had the same issue and changed the steering dampner, needed changed but didn't take the vib away. Put 4 new bilstein shocks on and wow what a difference, took almost all vib in steering wheel away. The ride and handling got about 80% better. With 133,000 on him the rest of suspension to follow soon, can't to find a weekend to do it.
