1972 350sl transmission
I am looking at one on ebay...they say the transmission hesitates going into reverse.... could there be an external adjustment for this..
this is real close to me..so i will have a chance to inspect it and drive it this weekend..... i am thinking more and more that i would like to have one for the garage...and as a spare car. i really don't need a/c or power windows, or a fancy top, since it would only be driven in optimum conditions. Probably at 13mpg and 3.00 gas...it would have to very optimum conditions!

Lee:
There is a reverse band adjustment for the engagement delay. I would do a word search to find more information if you buy the car. 230/8 edit: I found this on another site regarding a 72 350SL: "A lot of Mercedes Automatic Transmissions have a reverse band adjustment on the lower right front and just above the transmission pan. There is a 10mm adjusting bolt which is locked in place by a 22mm lock nut. Sometimes the lock nut becomes loose allowing the 10mm band adjustment bolt to back off. Reverse gear becomes difficult to engage until the bsand is re-adjusted. The band adjustment is tightened until just snug then backed off a prescribed number of turns 1 1/2 ? Please check this." Lee,
If you have a 350 sl with tranny trouble what you really need is a Euro 4 speed manual. I just happen to have one in you are interested. |

I had not heard of this so I went out and checked a '72 trans I had removed. Sure enough it was there. I then checked the EPC and found the screw and nut on the diagram. It shows they are in a location that correlates to the brake band, reverse location.
Very interesting. My '73 is slow to go into reverse. Thanks for the information. |
