On several occasions, I have seen codes read. The mechanics always use electronic code readers.
However, it may be possible to use the items you suggested, but I have never seen it done yet. Plus, you will still have to analysis the codes after you extract them. I really wish I could use these code readers, but I do realize it will take some understanding, time, and money. Once you’ve purchased one, it is probably easy to use. About the top, make sure you are reading from the manual when you attempt to open it. Because if the car is in the wrong gear, the top won’t open; if the ignition switch is in the wrong position, the top won’t open; if the battery is not fully charged, the top won’t open. Then, I would take the car to someone who can read the codes, or learn to read them myself. |

The top controller receives speed signals that it uses to prevent the top from operating when the vehicle is in motion. There are two different codes for this: 28 and 29. Which do you have? If someone else read the code and you don't know which, then you can use the paper clip to determine for yourself.
