1990 500sl steering column / memory question

Hi !
I have two questions for anyone with a 1990 sl.

First)
Is the steering wheel designed to raise and retract automatically when leaving the car.
Second)
All of the cars I have had with "memory" seats, mirrors, etc. only required the appropriate 1, 2, or 3 button to be pushed once to travel to the correct position. My car requires the push button to be pressed and held until the seat reaches the correct position. Is this working correctly?
Thanks for any and all responses,
Dan Gill

First question is a "no", no "easy entry" feature.
Second, yes that is correct, you have to hold the button, by design. In case you push the wrong button by mistake so you can't blame MB for having the seat run full forward on you while you're driving.

Gilly,
Thank you for the quick answer.

When I received the car two years ago, the up down function did not work.
The small plastic gear that drives the gear chain mechanism was broken and the worm gear had warn a groove in the remnants.

I found a steering column salvaged from an engine fire and after disassembly and some study concluded if I got lucky I could just replace the gear without removing the column from the car. I got lucky with a few millimeters to spare.

Now that I got it to work correctly I figured it was time to confirm HOW it was designed to work.

Other owners of newer models suggested perhaps it was an "easy out model" and thats why the gear teeth broke off!

Just a suggestion, the system should be described in the owners manual. I like helping out, but if you grab the owners manual and spend a few hours with it, you might learn a few things you wouldn't have even thought about asking.

Gilly,
Thanks for the tip!
I will try to get my hands on one.
I have seen some on ebay but just didn't get 'round to it.
I appreciate the answer and advice!
Til next time!
Dan

K', sounds good. Or actually the dealer can order you one up, usually about the same as an ebay price without the waiting for one to appear. Also there are LOTS of hiding places in a SL like this (R129), so make sure the manual isn't actually IN the car someplace, especially the door pockets (under the lid on each door) and the 2 floor compartments behind the seats. If you find any money you have to split it with me halfsies!
