Side Mirror
I have a 97 SL500 with a passenger side mirror that is inop. The motor runs (you can hear it) but the mirror doesn't move (much). I've managed to get the side mirror off the car, BUT, I can't figure out how to get at the assembly INSIDE. From what little I can see behind the mirror, it looks like one of the control arms linking the motor to the mirror is broken/gone. The outer housing is one piece, so there is no seem to split apart. The "break-away" spring is pretty strong, so removing that doesn't seem to be an option either. My guess is that the outer housing slides off, but I can't figure how. I've priced new mirror motor (the internal parts only) and they are around $400. It's hard for me to believe it could be that much. Can anyone help?

I think you'll see a metal tab holding the outer cover on. Look on the inside of the cover at the edge that would be closest to the car body/window. You need to deflect that spring (down or "in" I believe) and that will unlatch the cover from the mirror assembly, it then slides outwards, it will pass over the mirror glass. The tab retaining the cover have been different designs over the years, unsure what it's like on your SL, but they all seem to operate on this common scheme, so look closely and I'm sure you can figure it out. Usually you pry outwards with a screwdriver to unlatch the spring clip. Gilly

look here
http://home.earthlink.net/~tecqboy/ for a short video on the mirror. This is for a 1990-1995, but I believe it is similar for all models.

Side Mirror
Thanks to Gilly and Teq, the 97 side mirror does have a "retaining clip" that has to be pulled out with some authority. The plastic housing then slides outward (away from the car). I had to do some "microsurgery" on the mirror motor as the armatures connecting the mirror to the motor had severed. I reconnected it with expoxy and a single screw through drilled ports. If anyone else has this problem, I'll explain offline in detail. Thanks again to the pool of experts for the replies!
