Reverse engagement
I have a '91 500SL with 40,000 miles. My transmission has begun taking a couple seconds to engage when put in Reverse. When shifting to Drive from Park or Neutral gear engagement is immediate; but when I shift to Reverse, if I step on the gas without waiting a couple potatoes, it "slams" into gear. If I wait a couple seconds it engages o.k. and drives normal. I had the fluid flushed and replaced at 20,000 miles. Any ideas on what I need to look for, and if there's a wear item or major problem coming up? The car was not driven much before I bought it. I think it sat idle a couple years .
Thanks for your support. |

Well... In case you haven't, check the fluid level when the transmission is hot (drive 10 miles or so), on level ground. Smell it too, while you are at it, to make sure it doesn't smell burnt - although I can't imagine that it would. It doesn't slip when cold, does it? (2-3 shift)
Other than waiting for it to die, just be careful not to let it slam into reverse. Do a search on 722.3 transmissions - you're not the only one who has slow reverse engagement. (although yours is a bit "young" for that) Also, try posting in the Tech section - several knowledgeable transmission guys there.

Thanks Larry. I'm definitely going to wait before backing up now. Hate to see the transmission go too soon.

Better yet why don't you take the tools to him. The views would be much better from his point of view.
