1978 SL - steering box

Has anyone attempted to rebuild a '78 450SL steering box? Mine seems to be leaking fluid. Can't see exactly where the leak is but the steering box is wet and it seems to be coming from the top of the box.

If you've done this job, how big of a job is it? Due to the lack of room, does the exhaust have to be dropped?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I replaced mine - rebuilding needs too many special tools.

Yes, you need to drop the exhaust. The biggest pain is getting the Pittman arm off the box and free from the other steering pieces.
