87 560sl runnning real rich, help, opinions
Hello everyone! Hope someone can help. My father and I just bought my mom a great condition 87 560sl for Christmas. Needs a tune up which i will perform this coming week, new wires, plugs, dist.cap, rotor, fuel filter&oil change, check timing.Just wondering if there is anything else I can do or check if this does not clear it up. It runs real rich, dark black smoke upon start up and eyeburning fumes all the time.I use to have a 74 450sl( incredible car!) which i knew like the back of my hand and became quite good at keeping in tune even with those (touchy)crazy dual point distributors but this 87 sl seems to have more electronics on it than I was use to.
I also have a ML 430 and it is notorious for having problems with sensors like the MAF( MAS) and O2sensors. Will this newer 87sl be needing a look at those components as well? Also does anyone recommend a good manual for these last of thebig sl's, been looking for a Haynes manual ( still have my 450's)or even an ebay one on cd but these are many and hard to choose from. Any and all help will be most appreciated. With thanks and happy new year! Anovaso |

The first place I would start after your tune up, would be a bottle of Techron fuel injection cleaner. Also since you are going to replace wires look into a set from the dealer. The genuine MB ones are the only ones that will come with the wire markers and rubber sleaves. If the MB is too expensive get Beru.
If that doesnt work try doing a fuel pressure test, You will need to buy a gauge for this. Fuel pressure test gauges go anywhare from $50 up for the CIS type. What ever it is you should fix it right away or you will destroy the cat if you havent already. A new exhaust for your car is $4000 from MB or $1000 aftermarket. I am very dissatisfied with my aftermarket system, and am currently trying to restore my 18 year old genuine MB unit. It does seam that you should be getting a check engine light. Does the light come on when you turn the key to the crank position. If not the previous owner may have had the bulb removed to hide a problem before selling it. Dont get a Haynes manual, they are useless. You can by a CD hear at Fastlane for the 107. I would recomend you search E-bay for paper manuals they are a bit expensive but worth while. You can expect to pay about $125 for a chassie manual volume 1 and 2 set and about $125 for a 116/117 engine manual. If your into doing transmission work that will go for about another $125. Some times you can luck out and these manuals will go for under $50. Some of the manuals sold on E-bay are the real MB manuals and some are copies. Good Luck John Roncallo John Roncallo |
