door check straps on 1990 300SL
The door check straps on my mother's 1990 300SL have gone bad. They make a loud cracking and popping noise when the doors are opened and closed. I have changed the straps on my 300SD but I'm assuming the SL will be tougher. Does anyone know how to do this?

Door straps
I just bought a 91 500 SL a few months ago. When I had the car in for service at the dealer, they noted that one of straps was starting to go. Part is $30, the quoted $600 for the total repair (for just 1 door).
I have seen how to do the repair on various sites (probably this one as well). It does not sound so bad, but from the dealer quote, I assume it would take a DIYer a while to perform the task (but most likely worth it!!). Hope that helps. Matt |

By all means so it yourself if you are at all handy. I recently did the driver side on my '95. The part is about thirty bucks. It's held in place with two bolts and a pin. Hardest part is gaining access to the door innards. Sorry I don't have the details in my head for that, but it's a few screws and a few tugs in the right place. You'll feel way better about doing it yourself, and saving a couple hundred bucks.
