Inside hood pad glue SL 500

Keep on using that 3M spray can glue but the heat dries out the glue and the pad keeps on falling. What is the best stuff to use to hold that bad boy down.

Patti,
The 3M Super Trim Adhesive, spray or tube, is my product of choice for hood pads. I did mine about a year ago here in FL, and it hasn't moved. The tricks, if any, are:
o Use a plastic scraper and adhesive remover to get the under hood CLEAN.

o Spray both the pad and the under hood, let dry as this stuff is more or less contact cement.

o With another person, press the hood pad to the hood beginning at the front/center, and work it out to the edges and back toward the windshield.

o Use a rolling pin or wallpaper roller to go over the pad once in place.

o Remember to reattach the front with plastic body pins

That bad boy isn't going anywhere. Remember too that this is essentially contact cement so make sure you've got alignment points marked as once it makes contact....

Sounds Good

Thanks Bob I will try that...I think one of the problems I had was not to leave it set over night standing up so it could cure.

Pat, here is what I did with 91 sl500, I completely took OFF the whole hood and laid it on a blanket, took GORILLA GLUE and a differen't type of apoxy I picked up at ace hardware. ITS much easier with the hood off and laying flat--A WHOLE LOT easier!! I just went to town squirting the glue around and layed the pad down and pressed. At the base of the hood (where there are NO clips to hold the pad down, I bought black plastic clips (JUST like the ones used at the front of hood and drilled some holes in a row along the base, cut the plastic clip length down some-so they would fit perfectly when snapped down, this hood pad is not going anywhere and looks great!
ps..Its not hard at all to remove the hood, just undo 2 wire harness and unhook the washer hose AT THE WASHER BOTTLE, and then undo the 3 bolts on each side--IMPORTANT, HAVE someone holding the other side of the hood while unscrewing the bolts, the hood will want to get away from you under tension. Goodluck!

SunGuy has the correct advice on the 3M Super Trim Adhesive. The 3M part number is #08090. Don't use 3M General Trim Adhesive #08088.

I agree - use only the 3M Super Trim adhesive. I used it when I replaced my hood pad over a year ago and it still looks new. But like everything else in life, preparation is the key; be sure to get all of the old pad off and clean the surface before trying to install the new pad. I used acetone in a spray bottle and did a small section at a time. Let the old pad soak so that it almost falls off by itself. Spread a drop cloth over the engine compartment to catch all the debris. Be patient, it takes some time to get all the old pad off but it is worth it. When you glue the new pad on, start in the back and work your way to the front. Do a small section at a time so the glue sets and the pad doesn't fall down. Not a difficult job, but just takes some time to do it right. Good luck!

My vote is for the 3M super trim adhesive too. Did it 4 years ago, still holding fine.

I used Permatex Headliner and Carpet adhesive P/N 27828 that I bought at the local Kragen auto parts, it has been 4 months and it seems to be doing a great job. The can indicates it bonds foam, carpet and rubber and is resistant to extreme weather conditions. I used the same stuff on my 1978 Trans Am headliner many years ago and it is still holding great. I too tried the general adhesive with no luck. Funny thing is my 94 E320 still has the original hood pad and it is in great shape, makes me wonder about the quality of the newer benz's. Just my 2 cents.

Used acetone to clear off old blanket, only chemical that would work. Then I used 3m Super Trim to put the new blanket on so far so good.

Dee8go,
When you look at the new hood pad you'll see 8-10 (I think) pre-punched holes at the grill end of the pad. These holes line up with pre-drilled holes in the underside of the hood. The front edge of the pad is held in place by plastic pins that go through the hole in the pad and into the hole in the underhood. The pins themselves have around 3/4" diameter round heads and about an inch long shaft attached to it with 'teeth' to grab onto the sides of the pre-drilled holes in the under hood. Tough description I know, but if you go to AutoZone, they've got hundreds of different sizes and shapes of these things. All you want it to do is hold the front of the pad in place securely.

Bob
